I would first ask him. There may be a specific model that is/will be used by everyone in the school. Like computers, no sense buying a PC if everyone in the school uses a Mac.

I used one when I was attending a culinary arts training program.
Never thought any more about it, but now, I just might get one!
Several brands of stand mixers also can use them as accessories, such as K'Aid, Electrolux, Cuisinart, Delonghi, etc..

You know I just made some pasta yesterday for my chicken noodle soup. The cutters on this machine are not cutting all the noodles completely through I am having to pull them apart now. You might keep that in mind. As it becomes a pain in the butt.

There IS another way of doing i;
You can just roll the dough flat with a rolling pin, as you yould with pizza or pie dough, then take a pie crust cutter or a chef's knife and just cut the dough in long strips.
You might also want to try adjusting the machine so that the cutters cab cut the dough all the way through.

Is it cheaper if you will make your own pasta? I haven't try it yet. For me it will the waste the time..

Yep, that's it Bently.
Actually, I DID buy that model.
Strangely enough, I haven't used it yet.
But I DID use one just like it at the culinary school.
There is one like it that comes with an electric motor attached to it for about $80 to $89.
ChefsCatalog.com has a red stand-alone model for about $200. :D

There should be an adjustment knob on there for the cutting part, I think.
Just looked in the instruction manual and found out that the motor can be bought as an option for this machine.
Didn't know that before.

I have to go along with CEZZZ. I have the whole attachment thing for my KitchenAid stand mixer. The roller, the pasta cutter, the discs for macaroni shapes and the ravioli maker. The novelty wears off within a couple of months and I wondered why I was going through all the mess and trouble when I get great pasta from Barilla. So there they sit.
However if your son really wants one I think one of the best is the Atlas hand crank. This seems to be the one everyone goes for. I know that I researched it once and the Popeil was not on the top of the list.
This is the Atlas.

These machines all pretty much look alike, reguardless of the manufacturers.
I think it just the fact that if it didn't come with a motor already attached, and mine didn't, and you want one, then the motor has to be matched up perfectly for the machine to work.
Also, DO NOT use any moisture or water of any kind at all to clean these machines, as the inner mechanism could possibly rust and corrode, making the machine inoperable.

Here are two that I know of.
I have the one on the left.
The one on the right is completelty electric, while the one on the left, an optional motor can be added to it.
The red one is availible at Chefscatalog.com. The one on the left can be bought at BB&B. :D
