I guess it would depend on the strength. If you are talking about a cup an hour of Starbucks-strength Coffee, that's doing the pumping inside your system instead of your heart and probably not good in the long run.
If it's a very weak coffee and its spread out over the entire day, probably not so bad, but that is still a lot of caffeine. I used to be that way in the office because the coffee pot was handy, and then went on an extended vacation and wondered why I couldn't function properly. Caffeine denial.
Either way I would recommend cutting your "average" in half with some other beverage (not cokes). :)

It also depends on the amount of sugar you put in the coffee. The more sugar you put, the harder is on your body.

It's mainly the caffine that people worry about, I think.
But as of late, I've been drinking it black with nothing in it.

I work alot of night shifts at my job, and I use to drink lots of coffee to make that possible. I don't drink coffee any more because the withdrawal headaches I get are very unpleasant. I instead drink ice tea, and that keeps me awake enough to get through my shifts...

Caffeine can have different effects on different people. Some people it can make really hyper and affect their heart rate. Other people it sems to have very little impact. Health wise it is always best to take in moderation. I used to constantly drink coffee and it never seemed to affect me too much (externally anyway!) but after a job change found I had less time for coffee breaks and I now seem to really enjoy a coffee because I only drink it when I can have a sit down and savour it.

The opinions are a bit controversial about the effect of caffeine. Long time experts said that caffeine stimulates the body to increasingly excrete liquid. You were recommended to drink at least two glasses of water for every cup of coffee just to avoid to lose too much liquid. The same applies for black tea and alcohol. These drinks contain a substance that is similar to the hormone that tells your body it must get rid of fluid. Maybe you have noticed that if you drink a lot of this stuff, you run to the toilet very often. Although it is obvious that your body gets used to these substances when you drink it a lot.
However, there are also voices that say this theory has been proven wrong but I haven't done research on that.
I think, besides the caffeine that might affect your heart rate and the sugar that can affect your health (if you put a lot in), one of the biggest problems with drinking such a lot of coffee is that you most likely won't drink enough other things. Remember you should drink 2-3 liters a day, and seeing that experts are controversial whether coffee can be counted as liquid intake, rather drink lots of other stuff. Coffee anyways doesn't contain any nutrients. It's better to drink 100% fruit juices which also contain lots of vitamins. The best and healthiest thing still is water. Leave the coffee as a treat.

I heard somewhere that 8 coffee mugs a day without sugar won't affect you. They ultimately do hamper slowly, but if you counter them with the positive thing we get from them. I hope no body minds that. Well the caffeine do dump you but always remember one thing a small quantity doesn't changes much.

I too agree that drinking coffee is good to your health but if not mistaken it is taking to much calcium from your body...so in a long run you might have a weak bone. I too drink coffee a lot a day.

I too like coffee, and we buy whole coffee beans from counter culture coffee in NC.Their beans are nice smell and,I like them. I drink probably 2 cups per day.But one time, when I had strong coffee,my leg felt so weired. It could be affect by strong caffeine although I had just one cup of coffee that day.Since then,I tend to drink occasional caffenated coffee and mostly decafe.
Do you have any favorite brand of coffee beans??
Thank you

If your body doesn't protest you should be ok. The other side of the coin is that if you use everything in moderation nothing will build up on you like the effects of caffein may be now.

Coffee may actually be more beneficial than harmful to health. The beneficial impact of coffee on health outweighs its potentially adverse effects, at least when consumed in judicious amounts. Like wine, coffee has antioxidants that get rid of free radicals in the blood and consequently lower the risk of heart disease and some types of cancers.

I would say to listen to your body and it's symptoms. Do you enjoy coffee or are you using it as a stimulant to power yourself through times when you would be better served by food and/or rest?
I think everyone has different tolerance levels. I just results of recent studies confirming that moderate coffee drinkers (3 to 5 cups/day) have lower levels of alzheimers disease.
For every study reporting the danger of a substance, there is usually a conflicting one touting it's benefits. Ultimately, your body knows what is best for it!

I too love drinking coffee, I used to drink 4 to 6 cups a day but I am trying to reduce it to 3 or less a day. Drinking more than 3 cups everyday, I am having labored breathing at night. I guess it is true if you drink coffee black it is much better, because to much sugar is bad for you.

Hello!
Directly, it won't do you any physical harm. What can happen is that you become tolerant to coffee, which means that you will need increasing doses to have the same effect, and secondary effects may become apparent: tremor, anxiety, headaches... The problem with headaches is that they will manifest themselves with high doses of caffeine and when you remove them suddenly.
If you have a cardiovascular disease, you should at least moderate your coffee intake, as it can unbalance your system.
If you exercise, it can even increase your outcome.
Excess caffeine can cause you sleeping problems, so I would advise you not to drink any coffee after 6 PM.
Additionally, it causes teeth discoloring and can aggravate gastric and duodenal ulcers.
BOTTOM LINE: Anything can be good for you as long as moderation rules.. :)
I hope it helped!

Caffine and Taurine (RedBull) provide an instant boost by accelerating one's metabolism. One can get addicted to artificial boost that caffine/Taurine provide. As one's body gets used to the effects of those two substances, we need increased quantities to attain that same level of energy. I would cut back on coffee majorly. It'll be hard but 9 cups a day is just too much caffine. I usually sip on hot green tea. Has 1/3rd the caffine of coffee and it helps clear your digestive system.

Some experts believe that coffee drinking, and particularly caffeine consumption, can have negative health consequences. But a number of recent studies suggest that it can be a highly beneficial drink. Researchers have found strong evidence that coffee reduces the risk of several serious ailments, including diabetes, heart disease and cirrhosis of the liver.

I sued to add lots of sugar and creamer to my coffee, but I've slowly weaned myself to be able to drink it black now. I'm not a coffee addict like some of my friends who NEED it everyday, but I enjoy it about 3-4 times a week.
I agree that tea is a great alternative to coffee at times, and can still provide me the caffeine boost I need.

Coffee has health benefits and adverse effects. It is directly unhealthy to drink coffee if you have migraine, blood pressure. 9 coffees a day is too much. Moderate level of consumption may not harm.

Here in Greece the locals believe the "Greek coffee" is the purest and healthiest kind.
I think its awful, but the only coffee I can stomach is weak latte which I have for a treat - so I am not the best judge!

I remember hearing a report years ago about coffee being bad for you. Then they changed it and said coffee is ok. Nine coffees is alot in one day, but the air you breathe everyday, radiation waves from wi-fi and cellphones, and everything else is probably damaging your body more than the coffee :D

I sometimes have more than 1 cuppa Joe in the morning.
Caffeine contain in coffee has both pros and cons. You should avoid drinking coffee if you have migraine. Caffeine also increase blood pressure. Drinking too much of coffee is harmful. You should consume moderate level.

Mmm... Coffee, the name itself makes me feel like having another cup. It makes working in the office so much better! Charan don’t worry. You are not the only one who is addicted to coffee. But you need to examine whether your daily cup of coffee is doing more harm than good?
There are a lot of pros of having coffee like; coffee is loaded with antioxidants which help prevent oxidation. Also, coffee consumption helps protect against diabetes. But excess of intake may cause some serious harm. Heavy consumption of coffee elevates blood cholesterol levels. Also the caffeine in coffee can increase urine excretion. This effect may be easily counterbalanced by drinking loads of water.
So, what is the key? The old maxim - "everything in moderation and nothing in excess" - holds true for coffee. It is not as bad as you suppose. Moderating coffee intake to 3-4 cups/day would be beneficial.

A way to limit (I had same problem....) is to force yourself to 4 coffee a day.
One with breakfast, one mid morning, one afterlunch and one in the afternoon.
If you catch desire, just try to wait till next one. Once you are fine with four, then drop either the mid morning or the mid PM. At that point you are fine....
Also give yourself a day without coffee. Sunday if that is your free day. That helps resetting your body and would not allow increasing number of coffees doing the week....

Alot of people are suggesting tea instead of coffee. I'm not sure I understand the point there, becase unless the tea is made weak, (like green or white tea)they contain similar amounts of caffine. (which varies based on prperation) sure iced tea generaly has less per oz, but being a cool beverage one generaly consumes more. Are there any other health risks in drinking coffee other than caffine consumption?
I have between 2 and 4 cups a day...and it is definitely good for DH's health if I have my coffee. :D

Taking coffee in moderate is good for health but taking too much coffee is not good for health it causes headaches, restlessness, sleep deprivations, nausea and abnormal heart rhythm. I usually take 2 cup of coffee in a day.

Harokopio University research results show , If you drink more than one cup of coffee it may be result for cardiovascular inflammation. If you unable to stop coffee drink ,I suppose the best thing is cut down the amount you drink.

Isn't that finding "loaded" considering greek coffee is far stronger than espresso ? I don't want to debunk your statement but could you offer a similar finding from Harvard as an example ?
