Mushrooms do not need to be soaked to be cleaned. Simply brush them lightly with a vegetable brush or wipe with a damp papertowel.

You can rinse lightly if you feel the need. The only mushrooms I give a quick rinse are portabellos because of their large gills.

Thanks

All vegtables should be washed whether or not they are store bought or home grown. Do you really want to be eating the lovely spray they use on vegtables and fruits? What about a side dish of some dirt.

No thanks..

Mushrooms haf to be washed! I agree wid Like to Bake! Who wants to eat those little button thingies wid earthworm poop all over them? (How do you know that dirt is really dirt? It might be Poop of unknown tiny animuls like scorpions or whutnut.) :(

I think most commercially grown mushrooms are grown in a pasteurized compost that is safe, not dirty. I wipe them with a damp paper towel. I scrape the gills from portabello mushrooms.

I don't wash my mushrooms. They absorb the moisture if you do and it will ruin them. I don't even wipe them. If they look disgusting then I will peel them but that's about it.

I agree with Jenyfari I don't wash my mushrooms in water either. I wipe them clean, trim and cook.

Even though Alton Brown on Food network did a test on the myth about mushrooms abosrbing water when washed in it. And found that they would have to be soaked in water for over 20 minutes to absorb enough to be a problem. I am just used to wiping them down well before cutting them.

I give em a light rinse and they're fine. A bit of dirt never hurt anyone.
Besides, I don't think you realise how sterile an environment most mushrooms are brought up in. :p

I pop off the stems ( save the stems in a plastic bag in the freezer to add to soups and stews), throw them in a collander, and lightly rinse them. I don't really think it matters which way you do them.
