The French people are well known for being especially fond of wine and dine. This was expressed very well by Jean Anouilh (1910–87), French playwright:
Everything ends this way in France. Weddings, christenings, duels, burials, swindlings, affairs of state— everything is a pretext for a good dinner.
Why so?

The French have a long-standing tradition of an exquisite, lavish and elaborate lifestyle. Of course this pertains to the food culture as well. France (or Gaul) was where all the notions of etiquette originated from, and they also love taking time to celebrate things. The meal courses we have today (appetizer - main dish - dessert) is an abbreviated version of the French course, which is actually much longer in full.

I guess it is a cultural thing, I wasn't brought up to appreciate that sort of lifestyle so it is hardly surprising that I don't like French food, I don't drink alcohol so I can't comment on the wine. I went to France once and I couldn't wait to get home, I hated the food especially the meat, even their bread is horrible, in fact the only thing I liked was the mayonnaise. They feel just the same about our food, it is just what we are used to. Personally I like plain simple food without lots of garlic and herbs and spices.

I guess that French are greatest when it comes to cooking because they are very popular not only in your country but also in our country. Most of the restaurants here are serving some French cuisines.

Probably because of the famous "haute cuisine". The french chefs are pure artists, they have world wide recognition. The French have been synonymous with great cuisine for decades if not centuries. Their recipes seem to be very complex.

I think for the most part, it is definitely a cultural thing. The French have been this way forever, way back to the time of the Crusades and probably before that as well. They've always been known to enjoy their food and fun and engage in lavish activities. It's kind of amazing how France is still the same today.

I think France is pretty interesting.. it's a nice country with a lot of nice habits.
Maybe this is why lots of things resume to the french. I don't mind, i rarely pay attention to these things, but i'm just saying i think they're pretty interesting people :)

I have the same opinion as she_cookie.
The french are interesting people and i think this is why we relate a lot of things with their culture.
I remember i felt strange as a kid when i learned the words "french fries" .. i never understood why they are also called french.. oh well, the words are already in our vocabulary so there's nothing more we can do :D
