I have noticed that sometimes garlic in a meal or onion really makes me ill. I absolutely love them, but my liver is not always pleased with them. And also some fatty meals too. In a way it's normal since they are harder to digest. Do you have such examples too? What makes you sick?

I can't eat garlic and onions also upset my digestion, I don't really mind because I do not like either of them. I find strong smells very off-putting and some smelly foods make me feel physically sick, I cant stand the smell of smoked haddock or of black pudding.

I don’t believe that is such a meal that could make anyone ill because basically it’s all in our mind. We need to say to ourselves that we must eat to live. The foods that you are saying will never make anyone ill. I think that you are just being so sensitive of what you are eating.

It's not the particular food, it's just the way your body works. For me, cold foods don't settle well. This is because I have a cool body, so it's best that I try to eat something warm. It's the opposite for my brother who's always complaining about the heat.

I think that it depends on the person eating it because I have known someone who is an allergic to fishes and would get some red spots whenever he eats them.
I’m sorry to say that I don’t have any meal that makes me ill. I’m not the sensitive type.

I know what you mean shecookie because I’m also one of those people who can eat almost everything that is served in their plate. I’m not a sensitive guy. For the record I never got sick because of eating my meals.

Trust me, if you'd ever had genuine food poisoning, you would think differently.
Hmm.. i never got ill from food, unless i ate to much.

I can't digest cucumber, I don't dislike it especially but it gives me very bad indigestion, it causes a lot of pain and I can still taste the cucumber in my mouth a couple of days later. My grandmother used to peel and slice it and soak it in vinegar to help the digestion, it tastes better that way but it still gives me indigestion.

Liver makes me sick. I hate it, so it's ok, it's not a sacrifice not eating it. Then, fried onion. In this part of the world, we chop onion and fry it 'to give taste' to every salty meal, including soups. It upsets my stomach. Theeeen, sometimes i have trouble from eating eggs, especially on Easter, when I eat more than one a day, for like a week or so. I know it's not ehalthy, but here it's a tradition to knock eggs with friends and family and eat them with other starters as often as possible, around Easter.

I was once very ill after a meal in a Chinese restaurant in the UK. I was confined to my bed for three days. My doctor diagnosed an overdose of MSG.

Saurkraut.
It stinks, looks and tastes very bad, is very gross, and it makes me sick to my stomach - yet some people LOVE this stuff to death!
Not me!

Good. Then YOU CAN HAVE your saurkraut.
When at a restaurant and I want a Rueben sandwich, I ask for it WITHOUT the saurkraut. Or if they have cole slaw, I ask for a Rachael Rueben, which IS with the cole slaw.

seafood and fish make me ill. I wish that I liked it because so many seem to love it. Just the smell of the stuff makes me a bit green, I don't know how anybody can eat something that smells like that, maybe I have a defective nose!
Oh and cilantro, doesn't make me sick, but makes what ever it is in or on taste like soap to me. I remember my first big dose of it was in salsa at a Mexican restaurant, I thought that they hadn't rinsed the bowl properly after washing, it was only later that I learned that it was cilantro, and had tasted it in other dishes. None of my siblings can eat it either. What ticks me off is that it is the new "trendy" herb and some places are putting it in a lot of dishes. I went to Cheesecake Factory and all three appetizers that we ordered were covered in it (this wasn't the case in the past), this has happened the last two times that I have been there (2 different locations) it is sometimes hard to escape the stuff.

Cilantro IS overbearing if too much of it is used in a dish.
I went to a Chinese restaurant back in the early '80s in the area where I used to live, ordered takeout and when I got home, the food tasted completewly like soap!! Too much of it was used.
I made some Goulache the other day and used some of it in that, but you can best believe that I toned it down and only put a little in it. ;)

There are many foods that people don't care for because of their fragrance, look, taste or texture. One thing that concerns me is the common ill feeling people are talking about after eating fatty foods and/or junk food/fast food high in fat. My eldest daughter had this problem, and at times would double over in pain. It took years of going to doctors and trips to the ER from these attacks (which by the way started out mildly and increased as she got older) until a Physician's Assistant at an ER in Toledo, Ohio put his finger on it and determined the problem was her gall bladder. We had her tested and sure enough that was the problem. She had the gall bladder removed and has not had a problem since.
If you have problems with a sick feeling after eating similar foods, you may want to mention this to your doctor so you can be tested for a gall bladder problem. I have heard that some folks are given a prescription that will allow them to eat fatty foods without having discomfort, so surgery is not necessarily the only option.

Sorry to be graphic, but do you mean like you feel sick or it upsets your stomach and you have to run to the loo....Reason I ask, is that everytime my boyfriend visits and I decide to make us something nice pulling out all the stops...his stomach is affected BIG TIME....
And thought it was because he always drowns his food in chilli...but it doesn't happen to him with other people's food even if he does the same thing... man...maybe he shouldn't have onion or creamy stuff...

It didn't make me sick, but the food that made me feel really unhealthy is Chinese food. Maybe it's all that MSG they put in. I also found out that Chinese food makes me gain weight like crazy unlike other food. When I eat breads or pastries and I gain weight from them, it's easy to take them off. But when I gain weight from Chinese food, they stay around for a very long time!

I am from sri lanka. We use Garlic to prevent digestion problems. So we add garlic to foods we think might cause digestive problems.

I mistook condensed milk for cream cheese (someone used and empty bottle of cream cheese as a container for condensed milk) and smothered it all over my hash brown and rice without knowing. That made me feel ill. >.<

Hey Gibbs'y and welcome to your worst gastronomic nightmare! Don't know if the wonderful food on this forum will necessarily agree with you but at least you can fall back on that wonderful weight watchers web site you were so generous in providing.
Good thing you've got a cast iron constitution, your quite lucky..isn't you :D

I lived with an aboriginal peoples in the uplands of a mountainous rainforest. Our main meals were rice and barbequed marine fish that had been previously dried. The food was surprisingly tasty. Shortly after my return I became very unwell and later discovered paracites in me!!
So there's at least one meal that may have made me sick. I've had treatment for the paracites so you won't catch anything by replying to my posts ;)
I have also developed an allergy to wheat and so just about anything sold in supermarkets/grocery stores can make me seriously unwell and temporarily immobilised :(
Oh well, at least I can still eat fruits! :)

Hmm that is just so sad beginner cook. I can't imagine not eating garlic or onions. I can understand allergies to onions they are a bit gassy but garlic has long been used for its medicinal benefits. I hope you find out what causes the allergy.
