When you cook with garlic the smell stick to your hands like glue! Often you need to be some place else later and the garlic smell won't come off that easy... A good tip is: wash your hands with lemon juice, from a real lemon. It will wipe off the smell of garlic from your hands :)

That's weird... It never happened to me... I always clean away the garlic smell from my hands with plain tepidly water and soap... @ she_cookie, wouldn't cleaning your hands with lemon juice make them smell like lemon afterwards?

Funny. I just saw a video online saying that the best way to wash really stubborn garlic smell from your fingers is with moutwash! I haven't tried it yet but they say it really works.

Vinegar is probably cheaper. I have a spray bottle on my counter with vinegar/water for use in place of almost everything else. Even ants stay away because they hate vinegar. Kills germs too.

Excellent advice!
I sustain the question of Benton Tarantella: do the hand smell like lemon afterwards?
Although i think i can find the answer myself :) But lemon is good, i like the smell of it.
Vinegar sounds weird. But if it works - why not.

Maybe it’s weird but it works. Sometimes I use that method but I know a new one: put ammonia in a wash-bowl which is filled up , then wash your hands with water from the wash-bowl. That method will work.

You know what I haven’t done any of these suggestions before because I washing my hands with soap and water am effective. I don’t think of trying those unsual things just to get rid of the smell. Why go to those kinds of trouble when you can do it the easy way?

Warm water with lemon juice is the best way to ward off garlic odor from hands. it also removes the stain of turmeric or other stains from your nails.

As a garlic lover, I can't see why you would want to cover up that magnificent fragrance.

You can buy strange metal things to get rid of the smell of garlic but i have never found it to work as well as a bit of washing up liquid. I wouldnt mind using lemon but wouldnt vinegar make your hands smell vinegary though?

basically, the warmer your hands, the more your pores will open, and the smell will go inside. try to wash your hands with cold water before you use the garlic.
afterwards, rinse your hands with very cold water, to get the raw garlic off it. then once that is done, rinse it with warm water and soap or lemon, or whatever you like.
if you go from garlicy hands straight to warm water, the smell will stay in a lot longer.
works like a charm with fish also

it could sounds strange but try to use an orange. Cut the orange in two parts and scrub it in your hands! Then wash your hands!

Not sure if I've replied to this but use lemon juice on your hands and flat leaf parsley for the breath ;)

I rub my hands on the kitchen metal sink, or if the sink is ceramic, rub your fingers with a teaspoon.
The smell goes away in an instant.

I've heard stainless steel works as well. The same technique also works with removing onion odor from your hands.

One thing I do is that I don't stick my entire hands on the garlic. Kind of helps me avoid getting cut too.

smell hands
warm water opens your pores, and this makes the smell enter your skin.
cold water does the oppposite.
wash your hands with cold water before using garlic, then after wash it wth cold water, then soap.
no hot water, unless you want a 2nd wash with soap

Never thought of pores in the hand opening up and absorbing the odor of garlic. Good tip! But yeah, lemon always works for me with most odors.
