View Full Version : Things you'd refuse to eat

All countries have some meals that are special and maybe unique. We all grow eating a type of food and for some it's hard to adjust to another cuisine or maybe to other products. Are there any foods you'd just refuse to eat no matter what? What are these?

I can share your opinion... I can't understand how some people can eat bugs  I also don't like porridge, and i'd refuse to eat not well cooked mashed potatoes.

I don't think I could ever eat insects (bugs, spiders etc.) unless they'd be cooked in such a way that they don't resemble their original form... I saw this documentary on the Animal Planet about some tribes in the jungle that ate tarantulas (roasting them alive in camp fire and then chewing them half-living) and I was quite sickened, considering the fact that I'm kind of an arachnophobe.

It's all a matter of social upbringing and what foods are commonly available. Anything outside the box of your normal life becomes repulsive.

When I lived in the orient I remember this newly-arrived American wife at a luncheon, munching happily on the pickled green beans and even commented about wanting the recipe. The Host gleefully informed her that she was eating pickled baby eel and not green beans. She lost her lunch.
The food was excellent but the mind wasn't prepared.

I have eaten rattlesnake, bugs, dog, cat, monkey and a few others because I spent time in a country where that was common and I was young enough to eat first, enjoy, and never ask. Spiders did't appeal to me, a leg thing I guess.

I wouldn't eat dog, cat or brain. I also can't eat blood pudding,; I tried it once in Norway and got really ill. I just really couldn't bring myself to if I knew what it was. I do generally subscribe to the taste then ask what it is philosophy however.

I don’t like the idea of eating some monkey, dog, cat and bugs. I think that they are too to dirty to be eaten.

@wildfire
What do you mean by eating brain? I never heard of any dishes that would include any brain as their ingredient. Could you explain it?

There are a lot of brain recipes in many countries. I've eaten pig and beef brain. It tastes pretty good when it's cooked with different condiments. I can even recomend my favourite Indonesian beef brain curry recipe.

Ingredients:
1 lb beef brains
1/4 cup thinly-sliced onion
2 x garlic cloves sliced thin
1 x green hot chili sliced open, and seeds removed
1 tbl peanut or corn oil
2 tsp curry powder
3/4 cup coconut milk
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp sugar
2 x salam leaves
2 piece jeruk purut (or a 2" square of lemon peel)
1 tsp tamarind dissolved in
1 tbl water
1/2 x green sweet bell pepper sliced long strips

Method :
Steam the brains in a Chinese-style steamer over hot water for ten minutes. Drain and cool. Cut into 8 to 10 slices, and set aside. Fry the onion, garlic and the whole chili in the oil for two minutes. Add the curry powder, and stir well. Then add the coconut milk, salt, sugar, salam, jeruk purut and tamarind liquid, and stir for two minutes to blend the flavors. Now add the brain slices and the sweet pepper strips. Cook, basting frequently, for ten minutes, or until the sauce has thickened. This recipe yields 6 servings, with other dishes.

Try it. You won't believe how wonderful it tastes. :D

I am not particularly fond of natural Oysters ( I prefer mine cooked ), also Yogurt, YUCK I Hate it, and "Frogs Legs" sorry you French people, but I have a Phobia to frogs, I cant stand to look or touch them, let alone to eat them. and anything alive, it has to be dead, or I wont touch it, I know its dead when you eat it, but sorry, not the same.

I think that I like to add this to what I already mention. I wouldn’t eat anything that is not on the regular menu of a regular person. I don’t like the idea of experimenting on something I don’t know off. If a trusted person can show me that it is worth to try it then I might eat it as well.

Here in Spain they eat EVERY part of the pig-- and there are bits of a pig that I definitely don't want to eat. Like ears, hooves, and intestines. I'll try anything once, but... just once.

i like all foods, except for the excentric ones, like bugs :D
I was never picky with what my mom cooked or what i ate in the city. I enjoy every meal because i try and find pleasure in what i eat.
Of course, if the food tastes awful because of to much spice or because it burned, i cannot eat it. I would rather starve :D

I don't take lamb as I found the taste too pungent. Not really like beef too but Ok with burgers. I prefer pork and chicken.

I once tried cow liver when I was very young and I get repulsed now whenever I even think about it. I heard some countries also eat cow eyeballs and intestines, and I would definitely not eat that. I also don't know if I could bring myself to eat dog meat, since dogs in my mind are pets not food.

I wouldn't eat bat soup, available in Cambodia. I hate that creature. I'd rather eat a lumbering black rat or the leg of a tarantula than a bat. This ugly furry creature scares me! It's strange, I'd rather eat a fried rat, but not a boiled bat. Just for the record, I'm a Batman fan.

There are all sorts of things that I wouldn't eat as I am not very adventurous. I wouldn't eat anything still alive like bugs and grubs and I couldn't even think of eye balls or 'extremities'. Thinking of more normal things I would not eat haggis, black pudding, veal (because I don't agree with the way it is produced), sushi, horse, dripping or brussel sprouts (I detest them).

Same here; I am not too adventurous in tasting different kind of food due to my acute sense of smell and taste. Chicken and pork are my favourites as they do not have strong odours or smell :)

I hate rice. I don't like it and i just cannot eat it!
I haven't liked rice since i was little, i have no idea why, i just don't like the taste of it. It's strange, since i love chinese food.. but it's all ok, i order chinese food sometimes and my wife eats rice.. by herself :D

I can't think of any food that I would not try.

I've eaten eel, frog legs, snails, blood sausage, deer, duck, rabbit, shark, goat, menudo, cactus pears, and enjoyed them all. I love to try new things to eat.

It depends on your social upbringing and your environment. My grandmother (Welsh) would cook just about every part of a pig. I've had many friends who were Chines and ate just about anything so I would join them. And my wife is West Africa. So I've eaten and tried just about anything. Sheep's feet are a delicacy in West Africa and I love spiced chicken's feet. Then snakes, beetles, brains, tails, intestines, offal... if the locals eat it I'll try it and there aren't many things I haven't liked yet. Just remember that in many parts of the world protein of any kind is a rare commodity and you'll eat anything. Just be grateful that you can actually afford to dislike certain things.

I would refuse to eat: dogs (because I have one as a pet), cats, horses, brains of any kind, frogs legs, snakes and monkeys (because monkeys are too human like imo).

I have never tried bugs (such as spiders and ants, but I would be willing to give these a go).:)

Two roaches were munching on garbage in an alley. "I was in that new
restaurant across the street," said one. "It's so clean! The
kitchen is spotless, the floors are gleaming white. It's so sanitary the
whole place shines." "Please," said the other roach, frowning.
"Not while I'm eating!"
