What are your favourite types of lettuce to use in salads and other meals?
Which salad do you find has the best "best before date"? Post your thoughts here......
I like iceburg lettuce, as well as many others, however I am very frustrated when the lettuce goes bad if it is not eaten soon enough....

Most cooks feel that way when an ingredient goes bad... I think... My favourite type of lettuce is the looseleaf one, which I find to be incredibly delicious in most salads. The Chinese lettuce type comes second, although I don't use it so often. I believe I've tried iceburg lettuce some years ago and didn't like it very much, so I never bought any since then.

I like Endive and Romaine. I like the different tastes compared to Iceberg lettuce and they also have a stronger body/texture which means they hold up better for service.
Here is one of my favorites:
Endive, Pear, and Roquefort Salad
4 to 6 heads of Belgian endive
1 1/2 tablespoons Champagne vinegar or white wine vinegar
3/4 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 egg yolk, at room temperature
3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
6 tablespoons good olive oil
2 ripe Bartlett pears, halved, cored, and sliced
1/4 pound good Roquefort cheese
1/2 cup toasted walnut halves
Trim off the core end of each head of endive and slice it in half lengthwise. Cut out the cores, separate the leaves, and place 1 1/2 to 2 heads of endive on each plate.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the vinegar, mustard, egg yolk, salt, and pepper. Slowly whisk in the olive oil to make an emulsion. Toss the pears with some vinaigrette and place on the endive. Drizzle the remaining vinaigrette over the endive leaves to moisten them. Crumble the Roquefort onto the endive. Sprinkle with walnuts and serve at room temperature.

Romaine has become my favorite and survives well in the frig, but variety is also the spice of life.

I like iceburg lettuce the best. My family always buys this kind for different dishes. I've also tried Endive, but it lacked a certain something that didn't make it taste as delicious as iceburg. Besides, it's not always available in my town's supermarket.

I don't have a favorite one. I just buy whatever i find and try to enjoy it :D
We make a lot of salads, so diversity is very good. I am not picky when it comes to food, so i can't say i have a very favorite type.

Ugh, iceberg. Sorry to all you who love it, but I hate iceberg lettuce! :) For me, it all depends on the type of salad. I love spinach salads with slightly sweet dressings, rucola for a bit of zing, romaine for basic green salads... there are so many great greens out there that I feel like eating one that doesn't taste like anything (*clears throat* yes, Iceberg, I mean you) is a waste of time. :)

I love green and red leaf lettuce.
I like green salad best.
I am not pretentious when it comes to food, but i always prefer the green salad :)
I think it is because of the taste :)

WOW Karenlyn, Strong feelings about Iceberg.
I would have to say that iceberg is the one I use most, I cant say it is my favorite. not sure I have one in this catagory. but use iceberg mostly for salad, shredded for tacos and so on. I also like Raddichio, but do like a good Italian salad or greek salad with Romaine, or a nice spring greens mix, with spinach, with some type of light venaigrette and feta goat cheese. Let me also say that I have not tried endive yet. trying to find a GREAT recipe that really stands out to me and will then go buy the very expensive little jewel and try it.
