Do you use to keep some loaves of bread in the freezer so you'll have bread for more that 1-2 days? Do you think this is a good idea?
Some people do this: they buy 3-4 maybe more breads and store them in the freezer. They freeze and before you at them you have to defrost them.
Do you think it's healthy?

I don’t do this, but my mother used to do it. She would buy a lot of bread then would take the other breads to the freezer to, not that she would do this because she want to hide it but rather to keep out the ants that would be eating them in the morning.

I don't do that. Keeping bread in the freezer would give it a weird taste after you defreeze it... i suppose... In my family, we buy bread (almost) daily. If you have to put it somewhere over night, you can wrap it into a plastic bag or something... I've never had ants problems...

Freezing Bread is highly recommended, especially for homemade bread that does have a long shelf life. I've never heard of it acquiring a weird taste though I guess it could if it was for an extended period and improperly wrapped. Homemade bread should be pre-sliced, frozen, and then individual slices removed as needed. No thawing is really needed.
The thing you DON'T do for bread is keep it in the refrigerator because that causes it to go stale faster according to the experts. Bread, if not frozen, should be kept in a cool, dry location on the counter...and to think we laughed at those old fashioned bread boxes.

I also do this.
I prefer to buy more than one bread then go to the store every day, and i freeze it.
When i know i need one, i just take it out and put it on the window. I don't like to defrost it because it seems to make it too fluffy.

We do this too.
Although i don't like the idea, i think fresh bread is a lot better than froze one..
My parents used to do this often. Go shopping and buy 4-5 breads at a time. They kept one out and froze the rest.
It does conserve it well but it doesn't have the same taste as it would have if fresh.

I have done this several times before and I’m not having any trouble with the taste. I think that keeping bread in the freezer will help it to protect from the ants that likes to eat it. I don’t like the idea of getting some ants on my bread; beside you can just re-heat it on an open fire or oven.

I'm not sure if its healthy but it sure helps the bread to stay a lot longer. It can also protect the bread from ants. This is the main reason why this is a common practice among our country. Besides, you can re-heat it whenever you wamt to eat it.

Everytime I bake bread at home, I freeze half of it. I tend to eat the first loaf while it is hot, with about 2 pounds of butter LOL
Bacause there are no preservatives and due to our high humidity, it is important due to mold.

I do this all the time and have never gotten any weird after-taste after it thaws. I love to bake break about once a month because I find it very theraputic and so always freeze the loaves I know we won't be eating immediately

We do buy the bread daily. I never thought about freezing it since we have a store nearby with such fresh and tasty bread I can't help myself from buying one. This way I can satisfy my craving and we also have fresh bread each day.

I used to store several loaves in the freezer, but it took up a lot of room and defrosted bread is never quite like fresh bread. I just buy bread as we need it now and we don't waste much because the children like to make themselves toast when the get home after school.

Keeping bread in the freezer usualy prlongs the life of the bread up to 2 or 3 days. Perhaps a better way to take out what you need for a few sessions and leave the balance in the freezer.

Defrosted bread doesn't have the same taste as bread that has not been kept in the freezer. I sometimes store a few loaves in the freezer, but only if there is some reason for which I know I can't buy fresh bread the next day (like - God forbid - being ill or having too much work to do to spare some time for shopping). I can't say I like defrosted bread, but it's ok in a certain context.

If your defrosted bread has a strange taste it is because it has picked up some smells from the freezer. Change how it is wrapped. The original plastic wrap some come in won't do because they don't keep the air out and will actually cause freezer burn.

I buy bread daily too.
My parents used to keep bread in the freezer but i don't like it. It becomes a little moist and i prefer to eat fresh bread from the store.

I always do this, but tend to slice it first before freezing then allow it to defrost naturally. Bread goes stale because the gluten (which is the protein that holds the bread together) absorbs water as the bread ages and the more water the bread absorbs the staler it gets. If you put bread in the refrigerator the cool temperature allows the gluten to absorb more water so the bread becomes staler faster. The drier the atmosphere the less stale your bread will get (so store your bread in a vacuum!).

We often freeze loafs of bread. They stay good much longer this way. They taste no different then bread left out when eaten as toast.

All my bread is frozen. Amazing that it will change texture/taste when refrigerated, but no change occurs when frozen. When I was a child my mother froze my lunch sandwich and it was thawed and soooo fresh by the time lunchtime came.
Great for other bread products too.

I have always frozen bread. We never used to be big bread eaters and a loaf could last up to 2 weeks. You need to securely seal the bag, then we would remove the number of slices we needed whenever we needed them. It was either that or throw away half a loaf ever other day.

I prefer not to freeze it... I prefer to buy it when I plan to eat. I'm afraid.. if too long in refrigerator, you will forget it, you will forget if you have bread. But some tips from me, you can put bread on plastic bag and put expire date on it. check regularly to make sure your bread is still feasible to eat :D

For many years I have kept bread in the freezer. It is so convenient where horme deliveries are not available, I have detected to unusual effects in the quality or taste.
Living in France, however, is something different. There they deliver bread each day, and they know how to get a crisp crust on the bread too, something few bakers in other countries know how to achieve.

I don't think so, for I don't buy bread which is more than I need. That's why I haven't experienced frozen bread.

I usually buy bread for two weeks and freeze it. I only have one loaf out at a time. The bread you get here in South Africa (which us Germans would call toast, not bread) is already sliced and it defrosts quite quick. I just take it out and in two hours or so it's ready for use.
I never had a problem with the bread tasting strange, being fluffy or whatever. My mom also freezes bread (nice German bread from the bakery which is basically like homemade) and it still tastes nice and fresh when it comes out of the freezer. Of course, nothing beats the taste of fresh bread. But even if you get bread from the bakery it doesn't taste the same the next day. For me, it's simply to inconvenient to go the supermarket every day for bread.
Mcnerd sayd you don't keep bread in the fridge. I think with homemade bread or fresh bread from the bakery that really doesn't work, but with toast it's a different story. I remember my first summer in South Africa, how much bread I had to throw away because it went mouldy faster than you could eat it. Then I started to put the bread in the fridge (just in the original package), and the problem was solved. I haven't had bread going off for ages, and the toast stays quite fresh in the fridge. So I got one packet in the fridge that we are using and the rest in the freezer.

freezing bread works quite well for me. When I buy commercial sliced bread, we don't eat it fast enough to keep it fresh, so in the freezer it goes just as soon as we buy it. 10-15 seconds in the microwave thaws it, or directly into the toaster.
Many times when I make homemade bread I will freeze one of the loaves, and pop it in the oven for 10-15 minutes which will refresh its crust and make it taste close to fresh baked.
I think that the secret is not to freeze too long.

I also freeze bread. I buy a sliced bread about once a week, and then put in the microwave a few slices every time I need. It works very well for me. I don't have the time to go buy fresh every day, and anyway the minimum size is usually half a loaf and we don't always finish that in one day.
The bread I buy is already packed in a plastic bag. For a homemade bread I think you should put it in a bug to keep it.
BTW, I'm new here. From Israel.

I always buy wrapped bread sufficient for a week and freeze what I do not keep out for sufficient for one day. I have never found any problem with taste.
I think the secret is in the wrapping. I would never put unwrapped bread in the freezer.
