Hi everybody. My sister has kids and has been complaining recently worrying about cooking eggs whilst trying to do other things. I'm a final year design student and doing a bit of research to try and design something to help out. A few points have come up that i'd like to get a a few of your opinions on and your help would be greatly appreciated!

a) Are there things (such as tending to the kids, hoovering etc) that you would like to be doing while eggs are boiling/ poaching?

b) Would you appreciate a product that times the eggs cooking then automatically removes them into cold water? this would allow you to be completely free to look after other things?

c) What other foods do you often boil? e.g. peas, carrots, rice?

Seriously your help is invaluable and I really appreciate it! If anyone needs any help with anything in return don't hesitate to ask.

Tom

a) I tend to ignore eggs that are boiling, that is one of the nice aspects of boiling.

b) I don't think I would use it. There are a few variables such as egg size and what you are using the eggs for, or peoples tastes in hardness.

c) Vegetables, brats, potatoes, noodles

tombenson, sorry that I didn't get here sooner. but in answer to your questions:

a) I don't boil eggs much, but when I do I use a kitchen timer, or bring water to a boil, put eggs in water bring back to boil and turn off. Then just let the eggs sit in the water and they cook just fine in the hot water without overcooking.

b) I have to agree with missingarrow here, I wouldn't use it either. Not to say some won't.

c) hot dogs, many vegetables, ect. as for rice, I would use a vegetable/rice steamer for the rice and walk away no chance of overcooking or burning.

Hope this helps you some what.

put the eggs in a pot of cold water, bring to a boil, turn it off and place a lid on it. In 20 minutes you will have perfectly cooked hard boiled eggs, it can't get much easier than that.

Also, when using raw eggs for stuff like cake batter, custard and such, I crack each one into a small bowl.

This helps to eliminate two things;

1. It helps eliminates egg shells from getting into the batter.

2. It also helps eliminates any rotten eggs from getting into and contaminating the food that you're preparing.
