Saw this article today, and thought I'd pass it along: Microwave zaps 99 percent of germs on sponges - Infectious Diseases - MSNBC.com (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16756662/).
I usually stick my sponge in the dishwasher but it says here that 2 minutes in the microwave kills 99% of germs. An 'till recently I thought the microwave was just for cooking and reheating food!
What I was wondering while reading that article was if the ones with the green scrub on one side will be safe too?
Happy cooking!

This is the first that I heard of that. I always thought that we can use the microwave for cooking our food. I’m glad that you are sharing this with us. We appreciate what you just share with and looking forward to use the said technique on getting rid of the germs on the sponges.

Hey, that's cool . I remember reading something like this in a magasine a few months ago, but forgot to check into it on the web. This seams like a breakthrough, so I'm surprised the article isn't more popular. I wonder if it could damage the microwave or something...:confused:

I never thought of it, really.. it sounds rather strange.
Maybe i'll give it a try, and see what happens, i hope i won't ruin anything :D

I never knew that until I have read it all on this thread. Thanks for posting it here. The only thing that makes me pout is that we don’t have a microwave at home to try it with. Maybe I should buy one for the sole purpose of cleaning the sponges, LOL.

This is a really good technique. It keeps your sponges sanitary, and keeps them from getting smelly.

As long as it contains no metal and make sure the sponge is WET. It is the water that the microwave is actually heating, not the sponge.

Yes I read this before.
Benton;
Don't do it that long!
The sponge can & will quickly dry out and burn!! About 2 - 3 seconds on High is all that's needed. Unless it's soaking wet, maybe.
