What do you think of flu shots? Do you get them? Do you think they work?

your thoughts....

I will be getting mine in a week or so. I have to for my job, but would get it anyways even if it was not a work requirement...

Liketobake, I must tell you that I am prejudiced on this one. I have gotten a flu and or pnuemonia shot since the day they came out. To me it is like vitamins or herbal supplements, it can't hurt!

Now, I understand that I am MUCH older than you, so I tend to take every precaution. Here is link from a favorite medical source that may help.

Since I started getting flu shots I don't think I have ever got the flu. However there are different strains of the flu so even if you get the shot it is still possible to get a different strain of the flu that is not covered in the shot.

True, the first flu vaccine of the season is aimed at the the LAST flu virus of the last season. My sister has Rheumatoid Arthritis and gets a shot in October and one in January. The second one is suposed to be updated to confront the current virus.

My hometown is in Iowa, on the banks of the Mississippi river. Every year, the river would flood and they would ask for volunteers to help sandbag. We had to get a DPT shot before we were allowed to continue. I ALWAYS got mine in my right shoulder because I am right handed and working the muscle made it much better and less sore. Now that you have TWO "LIFE" experiences ( yours and mine) you can pass the info on to your patients. Hope you feel better soon !!!!

Yes as these shots are made only to protect against particular strain.

Since I retired eleven years ago I haven't had a cold or the flu and I don't get flu shots.

Flu shots are sometimes good. I think colliodal silver spray works good.

I work with the elderly at a hospital, so we were indirectly told if we didn't get the shot we wouldn't get raises/bonuses. So I pretend like I'm being altruistic when I get my shot... ;-)

You're right about that but the stain it protects us against is the one that will be the most prevalent in the upcoming flu season.

I get one every year and haven't had the flu. But I haven't had a cold or the flu for the past 30 years. I just never get sick and I'm 68. So I have no idea if the flu shot works or not, but I ain't takin' any chances. :D

I thought I was invincible too for many years, never caught a cold or had the flu, but I'm in my 60's now and I got the Flu a couple years back that nearly ended it for me. My Doctor said a few choice words when he learned I was not getting my annual shot.

Yah its just like wearing a seat belt. You may do fine without wearing one, but heaven forbid when you get struck and you don't have any protection. Not worth the risk and its no hassle getting it each year.

I also reminded myself to get a renewal of my Tetanus shot (every 10 years).

I usually dont but I think that this year I will get one because of all this fuzz about the new swine flu :)

The vaccine for this new strain of swine flu hasn't been developed yet and won't be ready for another 6 months. The flu vaccine that we have now doesn't protect against this particular strain. Hopefully the people in the U.S. will stay away from Mexico til this thing blows over.

Really? From what I understand so far tamiflu has been successful in fighting this particular strain.

A flu shot is a vaccine that PREVENTS the flu virus. Tamiflu is a CURE for the virus. Two different things. Tamiflu is successful AFTER you get the flu but not in all cases. They're still researching it.

I normally get a flu shot once a year during my annual pysical exam, but this last time, I was given a pnuemonia shot instead. Never knew that there was such a thing!

The pneumonia vaccine is generally given once every 4 or 5 years. I get mine along with my flu shot. It's offered wherever flu shots are given.

On that note, I wonder why my doc didn't give me a flu shot as well. What was he thinking?
