yes, the octopus is lightly marinated in lime juice and onions, thats about it. the freshness of the seafood is what's emphasized in this dish

No it doesn't unless its off ! Where have you noticed this ? Greek style marinaded Octopus is to die for !

The heck it doesn't!
In the mid '80s, I worked for a catering company that also managed several cafeterias. The one that I worked at was one of the outlets at Havard University.
They would make octopus salad. The chef there always had me cook (boil) it. And the thing would stinki to high heaven!!!
I often had to block my nose while it was cooking because it stunk so bad!! i was so glad when it was done!!

Fresh fish should never smell..really! Not even 'pus - in Cyprus you used to be able to watch the locals 'temderising' it by bashing it repeatedly against rocks on the beach :) Not keen on the canned or preserved stuff - but fresh, it's really good!
