What is the best way to chop onions so that they don't make your eyes water and your nose burn (if you are like me)? I already wear goggles when I cook that complealy cover my eyes. However my eyes water so much that I can't see anything and my nose even burns when chopping onions.
Thanks

Hmm, that's a good question. I've also wondered what is the best way to chop onions without crying. My eyes are so sensitive that I cry when someone's chopping onions even when I'm in the living room, which is quite a distance from the kitchen. I've tried so many things from freezing the onion before chopping to using the food processor (really works if you're chopping quite a lot, but not practical for just 1 onion). What I haven't tried and which I find really dangerous is closing my eyes while chopping. I haven't tried using goggles yet. My solution, I ask someone else to chop the onions ( we are blessed with having a maid).
I read somewhere though that the best way to delay the onset of tears is to trim the stem end first, peel downward and cut the root end last since most of the tear-inducing sulfuric compounds are concentrated near the roots. Then chop as fast as you can!

One tip I heard over the years is to hold a slice of bread in your mouth so that half of it sticks out. That is supposed to absorb the fumes. I've never tried it so can't vouch for it.
I usually just hold my head back when cutting onions and that seems to help.

I am not much on gadgets, but I just use an onion/nut chopper. It also saves the juices which I also use.

You should try chewing bubble gum while chopping onions, it works well for me.

I seem to be finding that it seems to be what ever works for each cook is different. I keep them VERY cold, and chop fast, and keep a fan on them so that the gas is moved away from me. it works for me! LOL seomething different works for (as it seems) every cook.

I bought a small kitchenaid 3 cup Chef's Chopper the other day just for onions and garlic. Works great.
