Do you eat foods that have past the best before date?
For me it depends. For dairy I example milk I might bake something with it, if it is one day past the best before date other wise it gets emptied out. For meat I don't eat it if it has passed. However I just ate some marshmellows that expired in 2006 and they were just fine....

I am old enough to have been around when there was no such thing as Use By dates. We just used to look at the food and smell it and if that was all fine then we would use it. I am still like that today although I can get a bit fussy around milk and cream.

Hey just curious, I am a young one (in my 20's) when did best before dates start? They have been around as long as I can remember in Canada.....

Not sure. I can remeber some labeling in the 80's and the best I could find on the net is from Australia where they made it mandatory in 2002:

All in all, I am not sure what to believe. We put so many preservatives and chemicals in our store bought food that we MUST put these dates on the label so the food doesn't kill us.
I think we have messed up the process somewhere. :)

Well I am 41 and I seem to remember them coming in around when I was a teenager although I could be wrong. This is in Australia mind you so I am not sure about the rest of the world.

I used to think that if it smelled okay and looked okay then it was okay to eat. But I'm not so sure anymore. Apparently some of the additives in todays food may look harmless but actually aren't. A sad reflection of how we have managed to get it all so wrong by adding goodness knows what to our natural food.

This is true.
It depends on what food you're talking about. I ate a box of Kraft Mac and Cheese and then noticed that it's "use by" date had passed by a year and a half. I didn't notice any difference.

The date is barely of use only if the product has been stored properly................I hard two sayings in my kitchens to my crews,
1) When in doubt, throw it out
2) Would you feed that to your mother?

I totally agree with you Chef House. A couple days ago I bought some Indian shell things because I was going to make some wraps. The best before date was fine (still had a couple days before it expired). I was in a hurry so didn't examine it carefully the product. I got home to find it was moldy! BAck to the store it went, they did give me a full refund quickly.....

Hi, Barskdel
you are right, it depends on the kind of the food we are talking about .

Welll, it depends on the type of food.
You can use stuffs like chips, dates, or the things which are dried, fried or
roasted and even the baked one at greater degrees, even soft drinks too.
