Has anyone here ever had this disease?

It mainly attacks the joints, mainly the big toe, knees or the ankles. it is charaturized by inflamation around the joints in the legs, ankles or feet. And it is said to be caused by the uric acid that is in certain foods that we eat.

According to the link posted above, the uric acid travels over time to some of the joints in your limbs and sets up housekeeping there, where crystlization crystals builds up there, causing excrutiating plan, redness and inflamation.

As of the past week, my left ankle has been giving me this type of pain. I find it almost difficult to walk on after getting out of bed in the morning and after sitting down for a while. And then I find myself limping around the house or while outside walking!!

Made an appointment to see my doc on Monday. I'm afraid that when he looks at it and makes his assessment, that he'll tell me that it IS the gout, and he'll more than likely puty me on another medicine.

I have it in my left foot. Mine is at the base of my little toe. When I have a flare up it is nearly impossible to walk, and just putting on a sock (having it touch the skin) is excruciating. My doc gave me two prescriptions to treat it. I don't have to take them daily, just when I have a flare up, and they help quite a bit.

Thing is I eat quite healthy, most of the time, so mine isn't caused by diet.

My mom once told me that it comes from foods that have a high content of acid such as tomatoes, soda, citrus fruits, and certain veggies. She had it so rough. It made her cry in excrutiating pain!!

And I eat tomatoes in just about everything.

My doctor said that it can come from eating very rich, fatty foods, like organ meats, sausages (which often contain organ meats), hot dogs etc.

That isn't what caused mine. I am almost convinced that it is the Niaspan that I am taking for cholesterol (which I should be off soon because of weight loss). It has been getting continuously better since my Niaspan dose has been cut to a quarter of the previous dose (due to weight loss).

Hence the term "rich man's disease".

Part of why those things should only be eaten in moderation, like other rich and fatty foods.

I'm on Simvastatin, another med for cholesterol, 80mg's a day. I'm pretty much in good health as longs as I take my meds every day, to which I've been doing.

I'll find out on Monday what my doc says. Chances are, he'll say that it's gout.

One of the meds that my doc gave me reacts badly with statins, so when you go to the doctor, make sure to ask how the meds will react with simvastatin, I am also on simvastatin but cut the dose in half when taking the gout meds.

My mom had it and my brother in law has it. thier triggers were totally different. Mom's doctor told her that it was Red meat, coffee and black pepper

For my brother in law it is Chicken, that is the only thing that causes his flare ups. Wierd!!

And chicken is suppoased to be more healthier to eat than red meat!! Also, I'm shocked to hear that black pepper causes gout!

Whoopie Pie, thanks for letting me know that. It is so strange how some meds won't work with others though!

LOL, thanks. I also have heel spurs in both feet!

You would never know by looking at my feet, how messed up they are, I have been told that I have pretty feet for a man, LOL. Not a single weird toe nail or callus (I know, I know, too much information!)

Good shoes, birkenstock sandles, and crocs flip flops (way better looking than the clogs) and I keep the pain under control pretty well, I can walk miles without problems.

I had bunions removed from both feet ten years apart from each other.

I have gout. Even the weight of a bedsheet on my toe is the most excruciating thing one can imagine.
I take a pill every day to keep the flareups at bay. The med is called Allopurinol. Works like a charm. I like taking it because when I would have flareups in the past I'd miss at least 2 days of work and also have to be on crutches while the anti-inflammatory did its job. I used to use Indomethicin (sp?) as the anti-inflammatory when I had flareups. Works great but takes a couple days to do the trick.
Another food that triggers gout attacks, believe it or not, is turkey. Turkey is high in purine and that is one of the things that will cause a gout attack.
I didn't read through all of the replies, so if any of this is a repeat, my apologies.
