Is it me, or are there a LOT of those people posting on this cooking forum?

I don't remember if it's against the forum rules or not, but it seems to defeat the purpose of sharing cooking discussions HERE when people are soliciting us to go elsewhere.

And some are even trying to mine us for information to post on their own websites. Sheesh!

Damned annoying.

It's definitely not just you! I've noticed alot of that also. I would think they'd have to wait for a period of time before promoting their own sites.

I brought this up to Sherm, and the site owner is good with links in posts and signatures from day one. I suggested a minimum # of posts (10-20) before being allowed to post links, but it was rejected. Soooooo, what we have is a butt load of people that come in here, make one or 2 irrelevant posts, and leaving behind their pollution in the form of links to everything from personal blogs to links to pay-per-hit sites selling everything but cooking related items. IMHO, it a bit amateur way to run a forum.

Why do we stay here and tolerate spam when Doc is so good to us on NCT? I'm confused. Someone enlighten me as to what's going on. Use the PM if you don't want to post on the board.

The problem with that method is you then get new posters posting a ton of low quality, nonsense posts to get their post count up so that they can have access to their signature...

If it were me, I would not waste my time creating 20 posts filled with gibberish, just to leave my mark on a forum. I guess I don't think like a spammer.

Sorry, I was away for the weekend and I'm just now getting back into the swing of things. One of my laptop pc's had crapped, so it's being repaired at a friend's house. I did a recovery / restore on THIS one, but couln't get the e-mail account set up.

Yeah, I've banned sevreal members for engaging in that unfair practice. And once they get going with that, it's hard to stop them other than banning them completely. But if I have to ban them after a warning, then so be it. I will do that. Thank you.

And even then, it's only to post either a link to a blog or to post a link to help solicit something on a website on the sly.

I posted a warning in the Updates & Announcements forum, warning new members that if they engage in this unfair practice of post-count gorging, they will be disiplined.

I just banned Stavgn. For intentionally spamming and for post-count gorging. He was intentionally being a post-count whore.

I just realised that he didn't have access to a sig yet because he did not have 50 posts posted yet. So he cageily planned to include his link to that blog in all of his posts to make it look as though it was a sig, but it was not, so he's Gonzo now.

Caught on to what he was doing and canned him.

Tom is also banned for the same thing. They thought that they were smart.

I don't know what kind of "Gotcha" game they thought that they were playing, but they got stopped in their tracks, and their reign of spamming the forum has now come to a screeching halt!

Yet another new member was just banned by me.

This one also, decided to post a fake sig in his posts, only THIS time, with solicitation links to a website that sells dildos and other sex toys!

He's been canned.

Canning a spammer. Interesting.

Like the Food Network show Chopped where host Ted Allen says; "You have been Chopped."

I found out that practice is not allowed here.

It is most often frowned upon by the site owners, as they feel that once members join those boards, they might stop coming here. Or come less often. Or vice versa.

you found out? i'm sorry to argue, but isn't this your site?

No, this is NOT my site. I do NOT own it, but I DO help RUN it. You KNOW FULL WELL who owns it. Tyler does.

You need to watch what you say if you want to continue to post here and you need to wake up and get a clue. You're starting off on the wrong foot. If I have to moderate any more of your posts, then you will be banned.

You've also received an infraction (or a warning) which will last for 2 months. Now, might I suggest that you move on to something more worthwhile to talk about?

I had explained to you that that wasn't the case, yet you insisted that it was so.

In a way, it is EVERYONE'S cooking forum as far as members go or are concerned. Sorry, but to me, it appeared as though you were being a wiseguy causing trouble. That is why I had to stop you from making such idiotic statements.

It would be fair if the link to this Forum be listed on their blogs/webpages as well.

Agree...I would make that a forum condition. Also I have noted some poster are trying to clock up posts rather quickly so they can then attach their website or blog link when they reach 100 posts.

I understand that 100 posts is the required number before you can post links ?. Consequently these posts are rarely more than one line and do no more than state the bleeding obvious most of the time or reiterate an earlier post. Thank you

Yes PappaLazarou I have noticed some of the fringe dwellers here exhibit those characteristics plus they never engage with other members and keep changing threads. It's almost like they are bots. Cheers

You are welcome.

Well, the only link I posted was the one to my blog when I introduced myself.
I have to be honest and say that I am proud of my little bloggy :D
But I didn't posted because I wanted traffic or something like that... I have plenty of people coming by.

And I posted the link to this forum on my blog so people know where about I am ;)

Question? how many posts does one have to make to get a signature and how does one get it? Just asking. Gopher.

The ruling that Tyler has made is that all new members must wait until they've reached 100 posts before they are allowed to post any sigs.

This also includes links to any websites, but those links must also be legit and not dangerously infected with any hackers, viruses or blaster worms.
