Hi All,

My wife had frozen some ground beef a few months ago and she unthawed and cooked it for sloppy joes yesterday. As she was cooking it, it gave off a vinagar type smell. I sampled it after it was thoughly cooked and it tasted fine. She unthawed in the microwave and the color looked fine (not grey). I decided to use it and didn't feel one bit ill. I'm wondering what the smell could be. After dinner the house did smell of vinegar so the scent was strong. Could the store have added some type of preservative to give a better shelf life? Any ideas?

Thanks,
Doug

I find that when I buy my ground beef at the butcher it smells fine, but sometimes I have bought it in a lesser meat dept. in a grocery store and the smell is different and I must admit a bit of a turnoff. I am sure it is fine but the smell does me in and I usually turf it and order chinese food! I'm thinking that some cows are fed crap and others are treated well during their sad and pathetic lives as our future food!

sometimes when you buy hamburger in your local grocery store it is a bit old, the older the meat the stronger the smell. It is probably fine but just smells stronger.

also these are usually the packages that have been rewrapped, the cover the older discolored beef with a thin fresh coat of round beef so that it looks more appealing to the eye.
