Has anyone ever watched closely at celebrity chefs cooking up a storm on TV? They are not food safe! They are always cross contaminating, getting germs everywhere and breaking every basic rule  It bugs me so much.. Am I alone in this?

Yeah, that's true. Especially if you watch Iron Chef. The only thing that really grosses me out is when they are sweating up a storm, and you SEE the sweat drop into the food.. lol..

As for them putting their fingers in a sauce, tasting it, and etc. I don't mind at all. It's really probably (unfortuantely) a lot less worse than what really goes on in the kitchens of most restaurants...

Oh wow, you read my mind. The celebrity chefs sweat insanely. I can only imagine.

But I think a little extra salt from the sweat is a small price to pay for the wonderful food Iron Chef Chen Kenichi makes :)

I have watched very little of the food network. However cross contamination does not sound good. I have not noticed this yet.

Who are your favourite famous chiefs?

I don't know many yet (from tv), however I find Jamie Oliver fun to watch.

:)

Jamie Oliver has a show on Americun TV? Where? I like him and his good is hokay but I think he's not much of a chef. His stuff is too simple.

I cook a lot of Jamie Oliver recipe. Yes I find it easy to follow and I particularly like all his salad recipe. He uses a lot of fresh herbs in his recipe and most of all it is healthy cooking.

I don't worry much about all of that. I figure as long as they aren't wiping the food on the floor then I am happy. I think these days we are becoming too careful and we lose our immunity to things which makes us more susceptible to things.

My favorite TV Chef is Alton Brown... he's funny without being a clown and he explains why you should do this or that and what happens if you don't. LOL His receipies are easy to follow.. :)

I like several, not sure I have just one favorite. I like Sara Moulton, Michael Chiarello, Tyler Florence, Dave Leiberman, Jamie Oliver, Kathleen Delmanns, Donna Dooher (cookworks), Anthony Bourdain, and Juan Carlos Cruz, I have learned something from all of them.

I watch all sorts of cooking shows and I really don't mind rules and stuff. Maybe I love food too much.

I just saw the first ep where the Southern cook whose dad killed himself wuz Evicted! I liked him although he wuz clearly out of his depth. He didnt even know whut an amuse bouche wus. A fruit cup does not cut it. :(

Amuse Bouche! That is a new term for me. I actually had to look it up. So, would you say, then, that it is like an appetizer?

PigsnieLite

It is not a regular appetizer. Basically it is a one-bite thingie and it is a signifier of THINGS TO COME! From the amuse bouche, one can make a pretty educated guess about the chefs cooking style. That is why amuse bouchees look so precious & difficult to make; the chef is presenting to you, in delicious abbreviated one bite form, his Signature Dish. :plite:

Thank you PigsnieLite! You have just given me a mini education in the art of fine dining!

interestingly enough there were a few on the first season that didn't know what an amuse was, but poor Clay to be the only one & with a fruit cup...anyway what a charmer takin' swigs of champagne right before the judging! who knows, he might have rocked but someone has to go & i guess the accent was an easy pick.
love bourdain though despite the contrived no reservations show on bravo.
who's your fav top cheftestant?

None of them make an impression on me yet except for the slightly obnoxious Vietnamese dude. Hung is it? He seems super confident & I am always impressed by people who can cook those nasty geoduck clams. BTW, I used to despise Sommelier Steven when he wuz around, but now my eternal hatred is reserved for Mr. Gourmet Foam. WTF! Foam sucks! Ive tasted foamy dishes & a more useless concoction I cannot conceive! Bleeechhh!

Ps. Youre welcome, MummyofTwo. :)

I practically live on the food network.

Same here. My absolute favorite is Giada De Laurentiis. Everything she makes is very light and simple.. Not to mention tasty! :)

lol, remember the movie Playing by Heart, with Sean Connery, Ryan Phillipe, Angelia Jolie, etc? Well, at some point in the movie, Sean Connery's character's wife is recording a cooking show, because that's her job. After finishing everything admirably, she gets the plate up in order to present it to the camera, and irrevocably drops the huge fish she'd just cooked on the floor. Then she picks it up and puts it back and says, 'and remember, only YOU know what happens in the kitchen.'

How about that, dear germophobes?
