View Full Version : Sea salt - Where!?

Okay, so I've still always used normal table salt my whole life. But I want to change, oh yes I want to change :)
It's not a matter of will, it's a matter of availability! The chefs on the Food Network keep telling me to use sea salt or kosher salt or anything but regular table salt ;) however I haven't seen these at my grocery store. Am I just being blind and not seeing it, or do you have to purchase them at a specialty foods store?

Island Natural has sea salt in a few differnet formats. There is the 'crystalized kind', however those crystals are fairly large. There is a format in which the crystals are ground up. There is also 'pure' sea salt, vs, iodized sea salt. Take your pick. They are not cheap though...

Sea salt is fairly common in most grocery stores so not sure why you would have a problem finding it.

Tyler when looking at the spices on your grocery store shelves. Look down it usually sits on the bottom shelf. the kosher salt is usually in a large dark blue box. And the sea salt is in a varitey of size, color and shaped containers but is usually there somewhere near the Kosher salt. I use both but mostly kosher salt.

Sea salt is the healthiest salt you can eat. True sea salt will be either pink or gray. It is not white.

Exactly. Plus you can buy it from Penzeys or at gourmet shops.
Sea salt, can, indeed, be white.

I use kosher as my everday cooking salt. I love the way it measures, is flakey so it sticks and has a good flavor.
I also have a couple of European "finishing salts" that I use at the end of cooking or at the table. I like the pinks, expecially the volcanic based. More minerals etc.

My family has been cooking with sea salt for years! We love it.
Usually it can only be found in specialty markets, but most recently I've seen it in the spice isle at common supermarkets (such as Smiths).
Just a hint... lol.

I live in a rural city of 13,000 and our RALEY'S Supermarket carries sea salt, kosher salt, and a zillion other spices, seasonings, and herbs.
I use kosher salt in most of my cooking and baking. I always use sea salt when cooking Tuscan dishes.

Sea-salt and kosher salt, as others have pointed out, shouldn't be too hard to locate. Similarly, I can find these alternatives to standard salt in the spice section of my local grocery store.
I've only been turned on to these alternatives within the last year... but I'm quite pleased with the results. :)
