I'm looking for a set of knives for my wife for Christmas. Does anyone have any recommendations? Some friends at work have recommended Warther Knives and Cutco. I've heard of Cutco but not Warther. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

If you are looking for a good quality knife I would not go with a set. Buying them individually is worth it. You will pay alot more money, but you will be way more satisfied with what you purchased.
Good luck with the search

I agree with LIKETOBAKE. Buy an empty block and then fill it with the particular type, kind and length of knives you prefer.
I like Wusthof knives. Good deals can be found on the internet and on E-bay.
Cook's Illustared did one of their reviews on knives. Download their assessment here:

They and I are also fond of the value of buying Forschner Fibrox
for your first knives until you have a favorite of your own:

Good luck! Check back in with the Forum if you get lost.

I found Forschner knive sets at Living in Comfort. They also carry Kershaw and Anolon too.

hobby bobby, I am sure you have bought your knives already. But thought I would weigh in on this one. And I have to agree with LiketoBake buying individually is a way to purchase Good knives without a Huge chunk out of your pocket all at once.
I like Wusthof, and Henckels. Have had no trouble with them at all.
So tell us! What did you buy?

I personally own a set of Shun knives. I highly recommend them. However, I also recommend to take your wife to a cutlery store and have her hold several different styles of knives. Each manufacturer makes their handles a little different. Find the best ones that fit her grip.

We all have made good, personal, choices. Last year I copped out and it was the best thing I ever did. I gave my sister two gift certificates so she could buy what SHE thought was best:

Easy out, I know, but she enjoyed them.

Absolutely try them out before you buy them. Knives are like shoes -- they need to fit and feel good.
You really only need a good chef's knife, a paring knife and a serrated bread knife. Sets are expensive and usually have knives you don't really need.
I'd avoid the Cutco people, if I were you.

I agree with Barksdale, like shoes try them first.
and then learn how to:
1) take care of them and NOT throw them in the dishwasher or a drawer
2) learn to sharpen them properly, or pay someone to do it.
3) learn to use a steel

a dull knife, produces short fingers
