I am making angel food cake but I don't know what kind of frosting or icing (is there a difference?) to make for it. I don't usually make any for angel food cake but I wanted to change it up. I just need something fast, easy, and simple. Thanks in advance.:)

I would maybe go for a drippy glaze to pour over it. If you wanted all over coverage you could go with a stabilized whipped cream. Angel cake takes to these icings very well.

I would try a nice strawberry sauce with some fresh strawberries in it and on the cake. Maybe also a few swirls of whipping cream to make things pretty:)

Angel food cake doesn't require nor does it usually get a frosting. The cake is served with each individual piece covered in a sauce or fresh fruit. If you really need to put something on top, use a confectioners' sugar glaze and drizzle it so it drips down the side. Click on the attached image.

Looks almost like Strawberry Shortcake.

Angel food cake is spongy and has very little flavor on it's own. It was meant to be topped and goes well with just about anything you want to top it with. It's one of the most verstatile of all cakes.

I love this cake topped with fresh berries and a dollop of whipped cream or sour cream, or better yet drizzled with a lemon glaze. Awesome!

Well, looks like everyone got this one covered before I got here. I was going to suggest a glaze, strawberry glaze, or strawberrys or maybe even a strawberry sauce.

I was raised with strawberry shortcake made with a slightly sweet biscuit (which is by definition a "shortcake"). When I moved to the south, the land of biscuits, people looked at me strange when I mentioned it. Seems that everyone here uses angel food cake or those little spongy dessert shells. Well to me this isn't strawberry shortcake, but cake with strawberries on it, not "shortcake".

What would most of you guys use for strawberry shortcake?

If you haven't tried it, bake a batch of biscuits with a little sugar in them or just get the frozen biscuit pucks from the grocery (not the canned ones), split the baked biscuits and sandwich with strawberries that have been mixed with sugar and become syrupy, top with the other half and put more berries on. Top with fresh sweetened whipped cream (or if you like cool whip type topping go with that, I won't tell!:D).

Yes I know.

I've made it several times from scratch to get rid of egg whites that were stored in the freezer.

Yeah, you can put just about anything that you want on it. The possibilities are endless.

Whoppie Pie, you're right.

My mow did it that way when we are kids as well. You can also use those small soft spongey little cakes with the well in the tops of them. Even slices of pound cake.

What I meant was that "shortcake" by definition is a biscuit type item. My mom would go the cake route when she didn't have the time to make biscuits!
