Hello Everyone!

I would love to hear about some healthy breakfast ideas. Right now I am stuck on hot cereals and Special K. I need to get out of this rut and try some yummy healthy alternatives.

How bout Muesli? What are the different ways that you like to prepare that? I am going to try that in the future.

Thanks!

Amanda

I don't take my breakfast regularly. So i can't suggest in this purpose. But i am sure that one glass pure milk with an egg could be a healthy breakfast.

And a possible trip to the hospital if that raw egg was contaminated with Salmonella.

Healthy breakfast ideas:
scrambled eggs on multi grain or whole wheat toast
boiled eggs with toast
cereal of any kind with some low fat yogurt
granola with some low fat yogurt
fruit with any of the above on the side
a healthy muffin such as banana muffins, pumpkin muffins, blueberry muffins (home made is best)
a multi grain bagel with low fat cream cheese

What I often have for breakfast is cereal mixed with fresh banana and or strawberries. Lately I have oatmeal almond raison crisp with multi grain cherrios and the banana and strawberries with skim milk.

Here are some of my favorite healthy breakfast ideas:

* Prepare a casserole the night before. Pop it in the microwave when you wake up and it will be ready to go when you are.
* Incorporate complex carbohydrates, such as whole wheat toast and bagels. Spread peanut butter and raisins on top of either for added flavor.
* Bake bran muffins early in the week, then grab one or two each morning. Or check out a local bakery for healthy varieties.
* Make waffles Sunday morning and freeze the leftovers. You can pop ‘em in the toaster for a homemade breakfast. Also, grocery stores sell frozen whole grain selections.
* Have you ever tried a tortilla for breakfast? Wrap up cold turkey and cheese, grab an apple and you’re on your way.
* Don’t forget cold cereal. We’re not talking about those covered with sugar, but the healthy variety. Items such as Wheaties and Cheerios are always good choices.
* Whole-egg or egg white omelets with fresh or frozen veggies (carrots, broccoli, celery, peppers, onions and even black beans make great additions).
* Make a shake or a smoothie. Blend fruit and yogurt and then drink it in the car. A side option is a small bag of finger foods, such as a mixture of granola and grapes.

Some of my favorite breakfasts include (depending on the time of year)....

* Fresh fruit and plain yogurt with a drizzle of honey or maple syrup
* Toasted sourdough or whole grain bread with peanut butter
* Scrambled eggs (plain or with chopped veggies) and toast
* Homemade Breakfast Cookies full of oats, nuts, and dried fruit
* Fruit and yogurt smoothies when the weather turns warm
* Baked Oatmeal when the weather turns cool

If you want to go for muesli which can be very healthy, rather make your own mix. The ones you buy often contain a lot of sugar, even if they are labeled "low-fat" and "healthy".

I love to make my muesli like this:

2 handful of oats
half an apple, sliced
half a banana, sliced
a handful of seedless grapes
half a handful of chopped walnuts or flaked almonds
and of course milk (if you need to watch your weight you should take low-fat or fat-free milk)

You can basically put any kind of fruit in you like. Dried fruit is also nice, but then you need to use less because they contain more calories then the same amount of fresh fruit. I think, a mix of a bit of dried fruit and more fresh fruit is most likely the best.

Instead of milk you can also make a mudsli with plain yoghurt, I sometimes love doing that, especially in summer when it's hot.

Otherwise, pancakes with something fruity are also a great healthy breakfast. You can make one big load of pancakes when you got time and keep them in the fridge. If they are in a closed container or covered with foil, they last for quite a few days. You can either eat them with fresh fruit (e.g. any kind of berries) and yoghurt, or make a fruit puree. Of that you can also make a large portion and store it in the fridge.

Hope you enjoy these!
Elisha

I make my own muelsi from oats and bran then I add whichever dried fruit, seeds and nuts take my fancy. I make a big container full that lasts me and my husband about 3 weeks then I vary the additions when I make the next one. You have to carefully read the packs of the dried fruits and only buy the ones with out added sugar. I like flaked almonds, choped hazelhuts, chopped dates, pumpkin seeds, flax seeds, chopped apricots and cranberries.

For me the trick is to always weigh out how much muesli I'm dishing up. I like it so much I get carried away with eating loads. I have 40g with a sliced banana and either milk or yogurt. Really heathy, contains a whole fruit portion as wel as lots of fibre and the slow release carbs keep you going till lunch.

Breakfast is the most important meal in the day for several reasons:
1 - You have nothing in your stomach for about 8 hours (we wish....);
2 - Most of what you will eat will be burned after a day-long work;
3 - It provides energy for you to be able to start the day fresh.

So, unless you practice hardcore sports in the morning, I would recommend a complete and varied breakfast that would include:
1 - 1 bread, preferably dark, with cheese and ham;
2 - 1 cup of milk with coffee, chocolate or barley OR 1 yogurt;
2 - 1 piece of fruit.

This way, you will have eaten carbs, proteins, vitamins, minerals... all you need to start the day!!

Also, you should NEVER skip your breakfast - unless you wake up late and prefer to have lunch right away... :)

I'm a fan of oatmeal - not the instant kind though. I usually add honey, cinnamon, almonds and raisins to give it some good flavor and texture.

Peanut Butter + Banana sandwich on whole wheat bread is great as well. Sometimes I add honey, too.

Hi there...

i got some tips here.. ;)

Fresh berries, yogurt, granola. Get low-fat yogurt (not non-fat, as it often has too much sugar) or soy yogurt, cut up some berries or other fruits, add some healthy cereal. I actually use the Kashi Golean Crunch instead of granola, as many brands of granola have way too much fat and/or sugar.

Grapefruit with whole-wheat toast & almond butter. Add a little sugar on top of the grapefruit, and it’s actually pretty good. The almond butter is healthier than peanut-butter, with lots of good protein to fill you up.

Fresh fruit salad. Cut up some apples, melons, berries, oranges, pears, bananas, grapes … any or all or whatever your favorite fruits are. Add a little bit of lime or lemon juice. Perfect.

Protein shake with extras. I use soy protein powder, but whey works well too. Blend up with low-fat milk or soy milk, some frozen blueberries, and perhaps some almond butter or oatmeal. That may sound weird, but it’s actually pretty good, and pretty filling. A little ground flax seed works well too.

Eggs with peppers. I’m not a fan of eggs, but many people love them. Egg whites are healthier than whole eggs. Scramble with a little olive oil, red and green bell peppers, maybe broccoli, onions, black pepper. Goes well with whole-wheat toast.

Cottage cheese and fruit. Get low-fat cottage cheese. Add any kind of fruit. Apples, citrus, berries.

I have been accustomed to soy bean milk with whole wheat bread. I just put the soy beans immersed in water the night before into the machine. It is going to be done after I brush my teeth and have a shower. With the hot soy bean milk, it's great to eat three slices of whole wheat bread.

Of course, the bread can be replaced by fried egg, which is great, too.

A grapefruit or fruit salad is always nice. My favorite is a bowl of granola with bananas.

The quickest, easiest, healthiest, most mobile breakfast is a fruit smoothie.

Frozen banana, blueberries, yogurt, orange juice, and 1/2 avocado for velvety smoothness.

Don't be afraid to put some spinach leaves or even raw broccoli in your smoothie. You can't even taste it, and you'll get all those vitamins!

Here's a few that I've been using (have a few as i enjoy having something different every morning that is easy to put together)
