Hi everyone,

I am a design student out of Boston, MA and I am currently working a project to improve the cheese grater. Now, I am in my research phase and I am looking at the three main types of graters (microplane, rotary and box) to identify any inherent issues that I might chose to address in the design of a new grater. I have not chosen which type (or combination of types) I am going to design, but I was just wondering your opinions about the current cheese graters out there (From ergonomics to stability, to performance as far as cutting surfaces are concerned, storability, cleaning) any type, any opinion helps! Thanks in advance!

I think a very easy to clean cheese grater would be very marketable.. Cleaning my cheese grater is my biggest pet peve of using it.

I absolutely do not like the box types. Here are my choices:

Hard cheese I like a wide microplane
Soft cheese I like a "Potato Peeler" type

My sister has rheumatoid arthritis and likes the electric ones because it involves the least amount of hand pressure.

Hope this helps. BTW, seek out a kindly rheumatologist and survey his patients requirements. It could open up a whole new field of interest.

I like the box type of cheese graters over all other types. I have grated my fingers too many times with non box types.

I love microplanes. Only just got one last year but they are the best. I also like the Tupperware cheese graters as the cheese is grated directly into the attached container.

Everyone will have their own preferences on these as I don't like a box grater but I will use the standard old flat grater. I love my microplane for hard cheeses, like Parmigiano Reggiano, and for the softer cheeses, I use an old salad shooter http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/002-7749013-2328847?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Presto+Salad+Shooter

It sherds cheese very quickly, slices and so on. very nice little machine. But will warn you it is a bit noisy. And cleanup is a breeze you just take 3 small pieces off the machine and they fit in the top rack of the dishwasher.
I have had mine for over 10 years. It still runs great!
