For your information,
as far as I am concerned, Microwaves, non-stick cookware, plastic spatulas & cutting boards do not belong in a healthy kitchen. :( In fact, they don't belong in any kitchen, especially if you say that your kitchen is healthy kitchen -part of healthy living. These products were produced to make your life convenient. They are unhealthy, which to me.

Most people are very busy and must balance being healthy with time management. Not exactly fair to label anyone's kitchen as "unhealthy" if they have to use the stuff you mentioned from time to time. Are they ideal? No. But the use of healthy ingredients and cooking techniques is not going to be canceled out just because someone used a plastic spatula.

OK. As far as you're concerned.

As far as I'm concerned, this is absolute nonsense. Are you trolling?

These things neither impart anything to food nor take anything away. If you're truly concerned, better to advocate avoiding wooden utensils and equipment, since the porosity of wood and the ease with which it is damaged helps to harbor bacteria and makes sanitizing more difficult. Cleanliness is the first step towards healthy cooking.

I suggest a little more study of food science.

Guess I'm old school.

Utensils and gadgets, appliances, along with food prep appliances, are some of life's most modern conveniences in the kitchen, and I certainly have a lot of them.

Dosen't matter whether you're cooking healthy or not, they make life run so smoothly when preparing meals every day. I don't know about anyone else, but to me, you can never have enough.

You wouldn't be able to scrape all of the batter out of the mixing bowl without a rubber or silicone spatula / spoonula, peel potatoes without a knife or peeler, cut slice or chop onions without using a plastic cutting board.

You also would need a can opener to open cans of food and a microwave to assist you with some things. Honestly, I can't picture a kitchen without a microwave oven in it.

Everybody has one. I mainly use mine for popcorn and for reheating food. It's also great for heating up frozen veggies and for softening or melting butter!

Jenniferlee, you might see things a little bit differently, but everyone I know has a lot of kitchen gadgets, and I for one, wouldn't want to be without them.

I have to agree with you guys!

I am amazed that someone would come to this site and try to tell all the people here that half of what you might have in your kitchen is BAD or Unhealthy for you.

In Her Opinion.

But I guess that is exactly what it is Her Opinion. Well in MY Opinion, I like all my gadgets and try to cook as healthy as possible most of the time. I don't think using a silicone spatula, and a nonstick pan is going to ruin that.

Ditto!!

I got so many kitchen gadgets, small appliances, pots & pans and other stuff that I can probably open a store to sell them - and that is exactly the way that I like it!

And whoever else wants to try to prepare food without the necessary tools that could help them "Get the Job Done" faster and thinking that it's bad for their health, then so be it. More power to them!

To me, that is like living in the Dinosaur Age.

I agree Bently. I love my gadgets and have LOADS of them. I use so many silicone spatulas that I have 7 or 8 and many nylon type cutting boards. I Love a Good Gadget.

Like Guy Fieri says on DD&D; "If it's funky, I'll find it!"

And don't let something new come out from Oxo. I'll be the first one there to get it if I think I'll like it!! Rachael Rays always says that you can never have enough kitchen gadgets, especially the silicone spoonulas. I've got several of them.

I have 9 silicone spatulas and out of those 4 are spoonulas. I have 12 pairs of tongs (short and long), countless wooden spoons, metal serving utensils, 6 nylon type cutting boards that can be put into the dishwasher and sanitized, citrus juicer (hand jobbie)LOVE IT, my OXO european style peeler, julienne peeler, apple corer, microplane zester, I could go on for hours. LOL I think you understand Bently. and many small kitchen appliances to boot. won't give em up! they make it easier and more fun to prep the foods you want to eat faster.

Indeed!!

A kitchen that is just loaded with many such ultra-modern conveniences! I probably have the same amount of stuff, and I wouldn't trade it for the world! I DO have to get rid of the real old appliances - the ones that I no longer use. That would make some room.

I like the pure pleasure of being able to choose between chopping and slicing things by hand or in the food processor. But I think I'll get another cutting board though. A nonslip one this time.

MEE TOOOOO Bently. I am a Gadget NUT. My sister and friends always come to my kitchen and find stuff that they have to go home and buy for their kitchen. Would never want to do without them!! In this we are very much alike. LOL

Yes we are!

Back home, as kids, we all probably had only a big knife, a paring knife, a can opener, a rubber spatula and a veggie peeler. That was it! My mom later got a Hamilton Beach stand mixer.

It was pretty rough getting meals prepped and cooked with only a few gadgets!

Today, there are an abundance of gadgets to own, and working without them is just plain foolishness. What does that member think we're supposed to do, live in the past?

You know big daddy's house, I remember that my mother didn't have all the gadgets either. She had a good paring knife, veggie peeler, can opener, and she had a blender too. but no electric coffee maker she had an old aluminum perculator (spelling), that she put on the stove.

Growing up we didn't get a micowave till I was maybe 12ish (I'm 24 now). It is quite doable to live without a microwave (maybe better for you, as far was micowaves/radiation goes). However I think why live without a micowave, when they are so fast quick and easy..

As far as plastics/rubber go I can see some people might not want to use them because of the chemicals that might slowly be released from them (maybe), but that is being pretty paranoid in my opinion.

We have many plactic/rubber cooking and baking tools and they sure make live easier.:)

As kids at home, we never had a microwave either.

But as far as I know, there has yet to be any known danger of radiation leaking from a microwave oven. Everyone I know has one, just about.

That issue was debated years ago in the mid '70s, but was put to bed because no one to date has had any problems concerning radiation leakage from a microwave.

And BTW, the small screen-like thingy that you see in the door's window in all microwaves helps to keep the microwave energy confined inside the oven's cooking area.
