Interesting product. Appears to be from the UK so I assume that is where you are from.

It would never be approved in the US since there is no pasteurizing (canning) process to kill any bacteria, yeast, fungi, or other mold spores that tend to exist in many fruits. It is basically using an old fashioned "open kettle" method of cooking, pouring into a jar and putting a lid on.

The one-piece lids are not really considered safe in the US either, except by commercial companies with expenive equipment to keep things sanitary. Too easy for food to get on the underside and never been seen, which could easily contaminate the product when the lid was opened. The US only recommends a 2-piece lid where the screw band is removed once a seal is obtained, leaving the top clean and exposed.

Sorry, the unit is a Thumbs Down from me.

A friend & I purchased a jam maker between us. We figured that that would split the cost & as one doesn't use it all the time it should work out fine. Sorry everyone it does not take the guess work out of it as one still has to calculate approximate cooking times & hope that they are correct. This means that one can exceed the time as well. I have made lemon & rhubarb marmalade which worked very well & standard orange marmalade which required a fair amount of additional boiling. As it makes fairly small quantities it does mean that you can have a variety of jams on hand. I would suggest that one still needs a good jam thermometer & frequent checking. An improvement to the jam maker would be a built in thermometer that turns it off when setting temperature is reached. It does clean easily. The instructions are terrible & unless you have some knowledge of jam making you would not have a clue! I have made jam for years the traditional way & have never had a problem with bacteria/fungus etc as I sterilize the jars & lids very well & fill them when hot.

I have made jam for years the traditional way & have never had a problem with bacteria/fungus etc as I sterilize the jars & lids very well & fill them when hot.You then be able to do that for all foods and not bother to store them in the refrigerator.

Fortunately there is nothing going in jams that will kill you since the sugar provides a degree of protection but I'm surprised you have never had any appearance of strange mold or other growths. You have probably gotten sick at one time or another and your immune system handled most of it with only minor discomfort. You are lucky. Not everyone has that luxury.

Personally I would recommend everyone to come up to modern methods instead of living in the past.
