Hello everybody!

I just started a new blog about quick and healthy cooking. Can someone tell me which are the healthiest ways to prepare food? I mean the ones where your food loses the least vitamins and so on. I'm most interested in everything that goes quick. The idea is to give people tips how they can still make healthy food even if they don't have much time to cook.

Have you got some other ideas what topics I could post about? What would you expect to find on such a blog? I would like to offer information there that my visitors are interested in, stuff that is going to really help them. I mean, the blog is for them, not for me... ;)

If you first want to check what is already posted, the URL is http://elishas-quick-recipes.blogspot.com/. I would love if you could give me some feedback on what I have done so far. I'm new to blogging (never done it before), so I'm still learning but I want to make it as good as possible.

THANKS GUYS
Elisha

To me, "quick" and being impatient about the cooking and food preparation process is what is wrong today. It actually needs to go in the other direction.

Hi mcnerd,
in general I agree with you and I actually love cooking. I used to stand in the kitchen for hours when I was still single. But it is a fact that lots of people don't have much time to cook because they are working. And I think, you should then do the best with the time you have. If you just have half an hour or an hour and not two or three, then it's better if you know what healthy food you can make in that half an hour than going to McDonalds and having chips and burgers every second night.

I've found over the years that saying one doesn't have the time is a cop out. There is always time for things one 'wants' to do. Its a matter of priority of how one's time, day, life is organized. There is a saying that if you want to get something done you find a busy person.

I used to be impressed by that old fashioned "housewife" that did everything in the home, including raising the kids, and for a long time without modern technology to help, but then today we have a few of those that are now carrying on full or part-time jobs and STILL doing the "housewife" part, including making nice meals. Of course there are many who aren't doing any of it very well or at all too. It is how you set your mind and your priorities.

And going to McDonalds isn't bad, unless you have the burgers and fries every time. There are alternatives on their menu. I'll chose the Big & Tasty and get a salad instead of fries, but more often I will do a $5 Subway and get two healthy meals out of it.

And frozen dinners aren't bad, but expensive and boring in the long run. For some it is a start for home cooked meals which can then be modified by getting an entree and then fixing things from the pantry to go with it. Eventually one becomes confident enough to make the whole thing. Salads are a quick healthy side or main course.

I think it depends on the kind of food you are cooking. But it is generally accepted fatty food is not ideal and food must not been frozen for long. Some methods are also deemed healthier than others for example baking and frying.

Vitamins are lost as food ages, so it is best to eat fresh. Also When you boil veggies a good amount of vitamins and minerals seep out into the water. This is why steaming, baking and saute-ing are good options. Think "dry" methods of cooking, this doesn't mean the food turn out dry and unflavorfull, just means that there is no where for the vitamins and minerals to seep. I am a fan of grilling, carcinogens don't scare me ;). If you are looking for something lower in fat your choice would be to choose a method that uses less

If you are looking for something quick for veg maybe saute some spinach With diced tomato on top of a pasta? If you plan it right it should only take you as long as the pasta takes to cook. Good luck. Hope this helps

Oops forgot this one; there is nothing quicker than grabbing a veggie platter from the grocery store. Not that it's meant to be a meal, but definitely and quick and easy snack.
Also salads are very easy. These are also very healthy because they are raw. Raw is the most nutritious way to eat a vegetable.

I have seen many kitchens that are so cluttered they are at the point of being unhygienic and unhealthy. I think the essential point of cooking right is cooking clean. I cannot take dishes smelling of the previous day's meal or sauce spots all over your table top.

The healthiest way to cook food is when your are cooking any vegetable put a lid on the utensil to cover it so that the essential nutrients remain in the vegetables.

I bought an Emerilware Stainless steel seamer insert to fit the 3-qt sauce pot and 3-qt Casserole in the Emerilware Stainless Steel cookware set.

Really comes in handy for steaming veggies!! The veggies NEVER touch the boiling water below!

Here are a few trypes of steamers that you can try.

The one in the first pic is the one that i used to use.

The one in the 2nd pic is made from silicone.

The one in the 3rd pic is the one that I now have & use.

The first two are relatively dirt-cheap. The Emerilware one costs upwards of about $65.
