I'm not even going to write out the recipe. I just picked up a cake book at the library and was flipping through it, and spotted something called chocolate sauerkraut cake. I like chocolate and I like sauerkraut, but not together! I can't even bring myself to imagine it.
Maybe I'm very wrong, but I will never know.
Anybody heard of this crime against chocolate? :(

I have never heard of this. However I have heard of some crazy pairings with chocolate and many are apparently very good.
I have had chocolate paired with sushi before and it was good. It is the ONLY way I will eat sushi (I really don't care for sushi).

I know you're going to freak out but this cake is really delicious. I've had it and have made it. The combination of chocolate and saurekraut sound gross but the finished product is awesome! Very moist, deep and interesting flavor. You won't know it's saurekraut.
If you think this is unusual, try googling "chocolate sauerkraut cake" and see how many recipes you find.
Click Here and read the reviews (http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/German-Chocolate-Sauerkraut-Cake/Detail.aspx) I've also made the mayonnaise and chocolate cake. Great cake too..
By the way I put chocolate in my chili con carne just like the Mexicans do and it adds a great flavor to the chili.

Hi Drama Queen,
Thanks for defending the chocolate sauerkraut cake. I knew someone would say it was good. I was just shocked to see such a thing. I don't think I'll ever try it. I definitely like sauerkraut, but I will keep it on my sausages and out of my dessert. I just can't go there. But thanks for letting other people know it has merit.
Oh, and I am aware of adding cocoa to some Mexican dishes, and it is excellent.

I have a favorite recipe book from one of those City of Commerce types.
Anyway it has an appetizer in it that is supposed to be incredible.
They tell you in the recipe to have your guests guess the secret ingredient.
They say of course, that no one will be able to guess it's sauerkraut.
I have never been able to muster whipping up that recipe no matter how good it supposedly is. I can't imagine anyone not knowing that there is sauerkraut in there. This chocolate caught my eye, not nawh, can't do it.

Awwww, you guys gotta trust me on this one. You really can't taste the sauerkraut at all. You'd never know it if someone didn't tell you. The cake is sooo delicious and rich. Click on the hyperlink I gave Recipe River if you don't believe me.
Heck I think if you made this for a potluck, this would be a great conversation topic. "You made this with WHAT????" :D

Too bad you won't even bring yourself to try it. You can't imagine how good it is.

I will say this:
You never had anything until you try it twice.
If you don't give it a chance, how will you know it is bad?
I used to say the same thing about a lot of foods. The only thing I can't eat are the Brussels sprouts, can't pass the smell :(
I never made the cake, but now I am curious and I will try it.

Shame about the Brussels sprouts - they're just about my favourite vegetable! I just looked up the recipe for the chocolate sauerkraut cake - and yep, I'm going to try it - just as soon as I find some sauerkraut. I remember being unconvinced by the idea of carrot cake, years ago - but that was a revelation. If so many people, here and on other sites, are saying that this cake is great, well, it has to be worth a try?
Digressing for a moment to Brussels sprouts - if you only cook them for a short time, they don't really smell - that sulphurous pong comes after prolonged boiling (I happen to like it, but I can understand those who don't). Try them stir-fried in oil and butter with perhaps some bacon and chestnuts.
I wonder if there's such a thing as Chocolate Sprout Cake? ;)
Edited to add: There is! http://thecakedcrusader.blogspot.com/2008/11/brussel-sprout-cake.html Has to be done!
