For breakfast I had a bowl of Cheerios with no milk. I hate milk unless it is part of hot chocolate or ice cream. Instead of milk I cut red and green grapes in half and tossed them in the cereal.
For lunch I had left over barleyburger stew.
For dinner I have some left over chicken broth and so I am making chicken noodle soup for one. I just dice some carrots and celery, add some noodles and cook till done. In the mean time I roast a boneless chicken leg in the oven and when it is done and cool enough to cut up, I add that to the broth.
It is chilly and rainy here so hot soup sounds like great way to use up some leftovers.

I had an English muffin with some butter and peanut butter and a cup of hot green tea for breakfast.
Don't know what I am going to have for lunch yet.
For dinner I am going to fix salmon patties accompanied by a graden salad.
I won't be able to post a picture, but here is the recipe. (I wil cross post in the recipes section too, so it is in the right spot.
1-16 ounce can salmon
1/2 cup chopped green onions
1/4 cup chopped parsley
1 cup bread crumbs
2 eggs beaten
1 teaspoon prepared mustard
2 tablespoons lemon juice
cooking oil
Drain and flake salmon, reserve 1/3 cup of liquid
Combine salmon with the onions, parsley, and bread crumbs
Add the beaten eggs, mustard, lemon juice, and reserved salmon liquid
Form into patties, you should get 6 medium or 4 large
Fry patties in oil over medium heat until browned on both sides
These are also good on hamburger buns

I eat A LOT. I work very hard when I'm in the kitchen. I had 2 oranges and crackers for breakfast (I don't have a lot of food in the house). An english muffin when I got to work. The side salad that I put up under a miss communication. French toast left over from Sunday's brunch. A banana, coffee and a delicious mango drink that the bartender made to use up ingredients. It tasted like a distant more awesome cousin to tang. And a cliff bar. Not very exciting all and all. I'll do better tomorrow.

Tonight it'll be chicken and mushroom risotto with loads of parmesan, and maybe some garlic bread on the side.
I am eating, drinking, and being merry, because from next Monday,I diet..sigh...

Shepherd's pie made from leftover roast lamb, frozen vegetables, and mashed creamer potatoes. Cooking is a challenge now that my older teenager is on a strict no-sugar, no-grains regime (which has made her look absolutely great!)
The younger teenager hates fruits and only grudgingly tolerates vegetables. The only thing everyone likes is meat. Every meal is an adventure!

Not trying to sound sarcastic or nasty, but you can eat anything with anything.
Where is it written that you can'T?

11-07-2011, 07:27 PM
Although that didn't sound negative in any way, it really didn't answer my question.
Although your point in correct, in theory you can serve anything with anything (although if you were to do so you may be people last pick if given a choice of places to go for dinner) in practice it doesn't work. There are limits on what tastes good together.
So back to my original question, what's the attraction? What makes it all taste good together? Does it all taste good together.
Big Daddy's House

It's what you make of it.
Different people all have different tastes.
And BTW, I AM good at choosing places to eat. I've recommended countless places and ppl have come back to me and said that I gave them sound advice.
Sweet potatoes normally go good with ham, but who's to say what, when, where, how or why?

Can anyone explain to me the attraction of candied yams with a roast dinner? (or at all?!) Maybe it's just me, but can marshmallows really ever be served along side veggies, potatoes and gravy?
I've asked that question many times as an adult, however.................
"Candied yams" have their roots in the southern US, where sugar cane rules. Desserts that will curl your teeth - sweet tea (a mixture of sugar syrup and tea) - candied yams. Sugar and fat are the two major food groups in the southern diet. I know - I was raised on it. My grandfather was a big executive mucky-muck with U.S. Sugar Corp.
When my mother made sweet potatoes, the more brown sugar/maple syrup/molasses added, the better the dish. And every visible bit of orange potato had to be hidden by marshmallow. When we were kids, we loved it! When kids aren't taught to like their vegetables, it's easier to disguise them as dessert. Baked beans were also very sweet. Barbecue sauce was loaded with sugar. Coffee & tea had so much sugar you couldn't taste the beverage.
But you have to be careful - you can't criticize the high sugar/high fat diet that causes so much of the obesity & diabetes in this country. People get angry and take it as a personal attack on their lifestyle choices.
Now, as an adult, I find those sugar & marshmallow laden tubers to be nasty tasting. I no longer put sugar in either my coffee or tea. And although I still love a good piece of pie or pastry, I can't eat most sugar loaded candy. But that's just me. Most people stay with the tastes they learned when they were young.
But it's not just the American diet. There are some British dishes that sound as disgusting to me as marshmallows & sweet potatoes sound to you. Black pudding comes to mind. And mushy peas. And haggis. And spotted dick. ;) One of the wonderful things about the ecumenical nature of the internet and these forums is that we all get exposed to foods that we otherwise wouldn't.
On another site we once did a world travel type series. We took turns picking a country. Then for a couple weeks, everyone was to try to make a dish or two from that country. It was great fun, and we all got to experience things that we otherwise might never had tried.

That's right, and when my mom felt like having them, especially for Sunday dinner, she did.
We had them with beef, pork, chicken as well as ham. She was from the South also, and she cooked good old fashioned Southern-style dishes.
I don't eat them often because of the high sugar content and it DOES have some butter in it as well. Again, moderation is key.

The first part of this made me chuckle. I don't know if it was supposed to or not.
It's not really the idea of marshmallows and sweet potato that I can't get on board with as much as it is the idea of marshmallows and gravy.... the idea of the marshmallows and molasses on sweet potatoes isn't a whole world away from the amerging ideas for vegetable cupcake and cake batters, which I am all for.
As an aside, what could you possibly have against spotted dick apart from it's name? It's a simple steamed sponge pudding with fruit served with custard or cream. Nothing offensive there. (I feel no need to stick up for the others, mushy peas are usually either a grey/green colour of full or food colouring, and both haggis and black pudding are composed of offal essentially, not everyone's cup of tea!!)

Right, SilverSage!
I'm sure that we all realise and are quite aware of the fact that the consumption of sugary & fatty foods is not healthy, and that over the years, it WILL take its toll on people whose lifestyle is in danger because they keep on with this kind of unhealthy eating.
When we were kids, whatever my moms cooked, quite naturally, we were raised on it, and even though none of us knew of the dangers that lay ahead back then, and would rear their ugly heads years later, we thought that it tasted good, which it DID.
Later in life, moms began having health problems, such as high blood pressure, heart disease and other things, which lead to her being diagnosed with sleep apnea, CHF and diabetes, the same diseases that I was diagnosed with.
Then she had 3 strokes, but spaced well apart. When the 3rd one came, and it was painfully clear that we were sadly on the way to losing her, most of us if not all of us, began to change our ways & diets to more healthier ones. I was only 39 when we lost her. She went into a coma and never woke up again.
Since then, most of the unhealthy foods, I pretty much stopped eating. Well, not really stopped, but what I did was I began eating those types of food and cooking only in moderation. Which is why I always say that moderation is key.
Yes, candied yams are very sugary and pork is very fatty, but if it is only eaten well spaced apart like every 6 to 8 months, then why not enjoy it then? It does not have to be given up entirely, but it shouldn't be eaten too often either. And there ARE some parts of the pig that are almost fat-free.
Though we all strive to to live longer healthier happier lives, it is just too sad & tragic that our parents didn't realise this far ahead of time! They more than likely would have been with us today if they did.

I buy whole boneless pork loin when on sale and it has very little fat except on the outside (and little or no marbling of fat inside). Which is very easy to remove. Remember pork is the other white meat. SO ENJOY your pork BD just cut the fat off after it is cooked.

Well we filed our taxes so we went to The Longhorn for lunch. The 4 of us shared the Firecracker Buffalo Chicken Wraps appy - 2 half wraps each was a perfect size. Hub and I subbed out the Blue Ridge salad for the regular salad that came with the dinner - it was romaine hearts, blue cheese dressing, blue cheese crumbles and bacon bits - wonderful. I ordered a strip steak medium. The first steak came out gray inside. Well back it went. The second one came out and if I gave it a transfusion it would have galloped off. Third time was a charm - perfectly cooked. The manager comped my dinner. I only ate 1/3 of it because by the time they got it right the family was done eating!! I hate that!! Aside from the steak cooking problem the food was good.

Wow! Candied yams and cornbread! Sounds like typical Southern fare. Down South we make cornbread sans the sugar, and with white cornmeal. That way it is really good with milk. Hot cornbread with a very crusty bottom, crumbled in a bowl, cold milk poured over it, and there is pure comfort. And there are those who prefer to use buttermilk. Either way it is comfort food to the max!
