I have a ham bone with some meat on it that I froze from Christmas. I want to make something with it but have no idea where to even start. Never used a ham bone before.

Ides? Suggestions? Recipes?

I have never cooked with a ham bone either. Although I am thinking maybe something like pea soup would work.

I am sure there are other members who will have some other ideas.:D

Make homemade beans or bean soup in your slow cooker or a big pot. Just toss the bone in and let everything simmer for hours and hours. The meat on the bone will flavor and become part of the dish and the bone (and marrow) will give finger licken flavor to everything. The bone is removed toward the end.

There are lots of recipes out there, but here is a good sailor recipe:

US Navy Bean Soup

Serving Size : 4

1 pound Navy beans -- soak overnight
3 medium chopped onions
1/2 pound ham bones -- with meat on it
2 cloves chopped garlic
3 quarts Water
1 bunch celery -- chopped
1 cup mashed potatoes -- prepared
1 1/4 cup chopped parsley

Soak beans overnight and rinse. Place in large stock pot with ham/ham bone or bacon ends. Add 3 quarts of water. Bring to boil then simmer 2 hours (the longer the better my husband says). Stir in mashed potatoes, onions, celery, garlic and parsley. Simmer another 1 to 2 hours. Remove meat/bone and dice meat. Return to soup, stir and serve.

Split pea soup is wonderful made with your leftover ham bones. any dried bean is great with a leftover ham bone in it. navy beans and ham, any dried beans you like. just put them bone in the beans when you add the water, then let cook in the beans. take the bone out at the end, and pick the meat off and add back to the beans, and serve.

I make pea soup and bean soup with a ham bone. My friends know NOT to throw their ham bones away and save them for me. You have a good recipe posted from MdNerd or you can google "uses for ham bones" or "recipes for soups using ham bones." Lots of good info.

This is a very easy dish and very tasty.

HAM BONE SOUP

1 1/2 to 2 c. meat chips and bone of ham or 2 ham hocks
2 qt. water
1 pt. or #2 can tomatoes
2 or 3 lg. white potatoes, diced 1/2 inch
2 or 3 lg. carrots, diced or sliced
1 (10 oz.) pkg. mixed vegetables
2 stalks celery
Dashes of pepper to taste
Dashes of salt, if needed (ham may be salty enough)
1 lg. onion, diced

Boil meat chips and bone or ham hocks in water for about 40 minutes. Keep covered with water. Crush tomatoes a bit and add to meat. Add other vegetables and seasoning to taste. Boil until vegetables are tender. This makes a delicious hearty main dish served with salad and corn bread or toast. About 10 servings.
