Hi there,
I recently started a blog at http://editedtales.blogspot.com/ I have a section for cooking and I usually try to put up pictures of the food I make. However, I find it rather difficult to take good pictures..I mean, the food turns out pretty good but the pictures don't look too appetizing. I also dont have a fancy manual camera...but i am sure its not that hard to take pictures with a decent digital camera. Here is the section with some photos from my blog http://editedtales.blogspot.com/search/label/Cooking%20101%20for%20the%20poor%20student
thanks

I looked at your site and I think I know your problem. A digital camera will give you great, clear pictures and the color is unmatched. But aside from that is seems you're not using enough light directed on your subject matter. I use my overhead kitchen lighting - eight spotlights - and the lighting over my table. I also use a flash when taking pictures of food. If you can zone in close enough, you can create a beautiful food scene. I would rent a digital camera if you can, or borrow one to see what it will do for you.
Take a look at my blogsite Chew On This, and while you're at it, if you want to see some awesome shots click on the link For the Love of Food shown on the right of my blog.
If you scroll down far enough to the PASTA, WHAT COULD BE EASIER, entry you will see that I forgot to open the flash and the picture is dark.

I already saw your blog and the pictures seems to look good but if you like the pictures to be more beautiful and appetizing, I think you need to have a proper lighting and also put a little garnish/embellishment to your food so that it will looks good and at the same it will looks appetizing.

I had to laugh a little because professional photos of food do not use real food because it cannot handle the intense lighting required. There is a whole industry out there on making fake food just for commercials and other photo spreads.
You may have to do some digitial tweaking with an image editor to get closer to what you need, using the real stuff.

I too take my own food photos for my blog and they are not always perfect. I usually take several shots, choose the best one then enhance the picture if needed before posting on my blog.

I do the same with mine. Your pictures are always good with great color.
I take several shots at different angles then choose the best shot. I always use additional lighting but I don't enhance my photos.
If you notice on one of the pasta dishes and on the clams and mussels shot, the blur is a fingerprint on the lens that I didn't notice before posting.
Always check the shot before you eat the dish. :D
