Did you know that one of the measuring tools used in 1800s
vintage cooking was teacups?
The size of the teacup depended on the individual's teacup. They
ranged from 4oz to 6 oz.

In Turkey people still use glass cay (tea) cups and little china coffee cups as measuring tools for cooking. People seem to prefer it for quickness and simplicity.

My grandmother used to use teacups for measuring and it really did depend on whichever one was closest to hand, rather that a 'standard' cup.

It is very interesting. As a matter of fact, the measuring of food had its headstart in the 1800s. They started sending their wifes and daughters to cooking school. Before then, it was a pinch here and a splash there.

One of my aunts used to just scoop in all her flour with a large spoon. She would look in the bowl and know how much she had. She always made wonderful biscuits! Now my cousins wish they had measured what she was putting in the bowl, at least once. Nobody can re-create them.

One person told me, whenever their father had a hangover, that was the only thing he could put in his stomach.
