Yes, I actually made baked beans from scratch. I was pleasantly surprised as to how good they were.
I cooked these in a Cast Iron Dutch Oven. I think this would be best. You can even get these at Wal-Mart now. I believe they have some covered in enamel that are really nice.

2 cups navy beans
1 1/2 t. salt
1 small onion
4 T. Molasses
1 t. dry mustard
4 T ketchup
4 slices of bacon

Soak beans overnight in cold water. Drain, add 1 1/2 qts of fresh water and onion and cook until skins burst. Drain and save the liquid. Mix molasses, seasoning and ketchup with one cup of the liquid. Put half the bacon on the bottom, add the beans and then top with the remaider of the bacon. Pour Molasses misture over beans. Add more liquid to cover beans. Bake covered for 5 hours at 300 degrees. Uncover for the last 30 minutes. Add water while cooking if necessary.

Somewhere during the middle of the cooking I also added a little bit of Hickory Brown Sugar BBQ sauce from KC Masterpiece. Added a nice flavor to the beans.

ChefShan,
The Amish style home baked beans so great. I'm planning a outdoor cook-out when the turns cooler and these will be on the menu. Of course I'll do a test run before hand.

I don't think you will be disappointed. My sister doesn't even like baked beans and she loved these!!! Besides, it is fun to say, "I made baked beans from scratch"
