Hi guys
I am forever watching uktvfood but i love the market kitchen programme on there and now that they have taken a break for the summer, i do miss them:-). apart from different chefs and cooking personalities, they also have different presenters with different styles which makes it an interesting show.
what is your favourite show and why?

Mine are Sophie Grigson & Jamie Oliver, both have very grounded approach to cooking, which makes it interesting. They really come across very well in both their books & TV.
My way of cooking is very similar, that's probably why I like them.

I don't watch much TV anymore, but when I was young I loved watching the Frugal Gourmet, Jeff Smith. I liked his philosophy.
I will always adore Julia Child.
As for something current, I really agree with Jamie Oliver's mission to get people cooking.

I've gotten to liking Guy Fieri and his recipes. I love Ina Garten (Barefoot Contessa) not only for her wonderful recipes but because I like her very easy going, quiet attitude.
Can't handle, Emeril, he's a sloppy cook and too much show for my money. And why do we need to spend so much time with a band on a cooking show?
Paula Deen, that phony accent grinds on my nerves.
Mario Batali just can't stop talking and drives me nuts.
I watch Giada's show and especially like her Giada at Home recipes. But I have a hard time watching that constant, toothy smile.
I too miss Jeff Smith and my favorite David Rosengarten. The had the best recipes and no showoff stuff.

Hell's Kitchen for the reason of Chef Ramsay. :D My boyfriend and I both like him a lot. He's not afraid to tell it what it is!
When I was a kid I used to love Justin Wilson. <3 Nobody else seems to remember him.
"Ah garrontee it."
I love cultural chefs.
Paula Deen for example--even though she looks entire too much like the Tooth Fairy on Shrek 3--yes in the south we use 7 sticks of butter. And that makes it 7 times as good as if it had been made with "I can't believe it's not", or margarine.
Justin wilson was a creole chef--mostly cooking boston butt roasts and other typical creole foods. Mmm.
and then at the end of his show, he would sit down and eat it.
Another neat thing about Wilson was the fact that whatever he made was 1 serving. It went on 1 plate and he ate it at the end. :D

Good Eats, because Alton Brown actually tries to teach you something and he oftentimes shows you money-saving shortcuts. Unlike many other celebrity chefs who think that money grows on trees (Martha Stewart, ahem).
I also like Chopped.
I will sometimes watch that "Last Cake Standing" show because half that crap they make reminds me of the Cake Wreck blog. I just can't believe some of those people are professional bakers.

I hate that Food Network Challenge!! That show; Last Cake Stranding, is part of that, so I hate that too.
It's on too many blasted times, and it's so blasted annoying, aggravating and frustrating, especially on weekends!!
There isn't a day that goes by that this blasted show isn't on!!! I wish that they would yank it off the air!!!!

I love Alton Brown's good eats, I have learned more from him than any other host of food network.
I like Paula Deen's shows, I think that she has gotten too gimmicky but I still respect her a lot. And as far as her accent being phony, I'm not so sure, I heard that thick southern twang all over Savannah, I almost needed an interpreter!
The Barefoot Contessa, her "unfussy" approach to food appeals to me, I love cooking comfort food.
One host that I miss is Sara Moulton, she was excellent at teaching, very engaging and smart. I still catch an episode of her new show every once and a while on PBS.

Good Eats is #1 with me -- learn so much from AB. Seems like every episode has something in it to learn or reinforce old knowledge. Plus it is darn entertaining.
Followed by Iron Chef America -- I learn from it too. Or get inspired from it. Since my culinary skills are getting more advanced (thanks to Good Eats :D ) I love watching these great chef create!
Any other AB show, Feasting on Asphalt/Waves and I cannot wait for the new show, Food that Changed the World.
I watch Sunny Anderson's show, Healthy Appetite show with Ellie Kreger (sp?), and Barefoot Contessa on the weekends I don't work.
I've tried some of the shows on PBS but I can't find one I like. As a kid I loved the Frugal Gourmet.

HOLEY MOLEY, BILLY MAY, THE TV SPOKESMAN FOR OXYCLEAN IS DEAD AT 50. CAUSE OF DEATH SO FAR IS UNKNOWN. I LIKED HIM.
Big Daddy's House
06-28-2009, 04:53 PM
Yeah, I started a thread on his death in the Off Topic section.
I liked him also. I just didn't like all that yelling that he did in his commercials!! Soon as one of them came on, I changed the channel.
I wonder who will replace him in the DC show Pitchman. I noticed that none of his commercials were shown today. Maybe they were all pulled.
It was reported that he died from a heart attack, brought on by Thrombosis (a blood clot that traveled from one of his legs to his heart), a condition that he didn't know that he had.

Sandra Lee Semi Homemade because she's ridiculous and hilarious without even trying.
Big Daddy's House
07-31-2009, 12:50 PM
I don't find her ridiculous at all.
I think that she's very well-educated and she has gone through a lot as a child, dealing with family tragedies and having to help raise her younger siblings.
Money and food were often hard to come by, and they were always forced to do without and make do with the little food they had.

I'm gonna have to step up and say that Sandra Lee is a woman that has NO IDEA HOW TO COOK FROM SCRATCH, and her show is more about having the perfect color coordination between her STUPID dishes and the STUPID backdrop than it is about actual cooking.
Big Daddy's House

Blame the FN for that.
But I think that it's a show for those who are trying to cook good food and save money as well.

I look at it this way, she is filling a niche, there are lots of people that cook this way and she speaks to them. I don't get anything from her show other than sheer entertainment, but many do.
I see it this way, if she can take the intimidation out of cooking for someone that is just learning, that is a good thing. If she can get people in the kitchen to cook for themselves that is also good. Maybe just maybe they will be encouraged to try better dishes from other FN stars if they feel more comfortable in the kitchen.
And how do you know that she cannot cook from scratch? If most people were making millions combining things out of packages, would they change the one thing that makes them famous and risk losing it all?

I think the best cooking shows for the novice and even the advanced home cooks are the shows produced by Cook's Illustrated for PBS. Seriously, PBS was all about cooking shows before Food Network was just a gleam in some producer's eye. Most of the shows on FN I find to be too hollywood, with very little real cooking advice. Shows like "America's Test Kitchen" and "Cook's Country" provide real cooking advice, product testing and taste tests. And no, I am not Christopher Kimball.

:p Me too! I love it! I cant see the UK one here but the Greeks have copied it and called it "something's cooking" and I am addicted! I just get annoyed when one of them is a whinger and says "I dont eat ......" or "I am allergic to ......" (and then continue to eat the item right next to it on the same plate - thats not my idea of an allergy) I just think if you are a fussy eater you shouldnt really enter this type of show.
Love it though!

I'm only going to watch Iron Chef America this coming Sunday because it is on for 2 hours and Emeril Lagasse is on there for the first time that I can remember.

I don't like the whole endorsement between Emeril and Wuthosf. It makes me mad, because Wusthof is a great brand of knife and the Emeril line of knifes that they came out with are a pieces of crap. It makes both of them have a lot less credibility. That being said, I have only seen Emeril's show once, so I I'm not in a place to judge... too late.

I mainly like their daytime line-up of 30-minute shows, but not that boring miserable worn-out & tired Food Network Challenge, which is on all week and 3 or 4 times on weekends!
Neither do I care at all for their night-time line-up, which is mainly those awful boring challenge shows!! I only like Chopped, Throwdown and Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives.

I'm a channel flipper when there's not a good movie on (or it's football season). I caught his show quite by accident and said to myself, this is FitTV? I didn't even know that I had that channel, lol. It was his chimichito episode and I've made those probably half a dozen times inside of three months.
I like his quirky/fun style. And that sometimes he needs to step over his dogs when he's cooking ;^)

He's so personable and all of the things he makes he explains and are so simple I feel like I could make them, and I'm currently a terrible cook, but I'm hoping by watching a lot of the Food Network I can learn about cooking techniques and ingredients I didn't know about.

There are other good shows in addition to what I've mentioned but haven't caught who they are or the title of the show. Sandra Lee is a good show. Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives would be a good show if it wern't for the host talking too much.
Unwrapped, while not a cooking show, is interesting. I have to share tv time so I don't get as much chance to watch what I prefer as much as I'd like. I prefer "one on one", a host to viewer intimacy as opposed to shows who have a huge cheering section, like Emeril or whatever his name is. The old "Galloping Gourmet" had an audience but it was nicely subdued. Emeril is much too noisy for me.
It's sort of like "Happy Days", which was better before the studio audience got brought in & cheered and whooped each time Fonz or somebody came on stage. Any show with too much whoop-it-up noise is annoying to me.

The Channel 4 website has a lot of the recipes from the show, too - they don't really explain them during the programme. I *loved* the recent celebrity episiode with Wayne Sleep in it - very funny!
Oo, editing 'cos I forgot to say I love all the River Cottage programmes too - Hugh F-W changed my life, in a way - we do try to grow and eat our own veggies (and eggs), and do some wild foraging as well - all down to him. His
'Meat' book is something every cook should read - even the vegetarians amongst us, because it explains his ideas about ethical meat very well. The River Cottage handbooks (Hedgerow, Sea Fishing, Bread, Preserves, Cakes, Veggie Patch, Edible Seashore) are good too - I have them all apart from Cake - which I'll be getting soon.

No, but I have tried Moussaka and I adore it. And there is no pasta in it. Maybe your confusing it with Pasticcio :)

I gotta say, Diners Drive-Ins and Dives is my favourite, I just love that roadhouse style. But I have a few others I really like. Not sure if you guys get them in the States and UK, but Chef at Home is pretty great, Michael Smith is one my favs. Another great one is the Wild Chef, because Martin Picard is a Mad Scientist. Anyone familiar with the Quebec episode of No Reservations (another great one, but not exactly cooking) knows about his Foie Gras Poutine. Finally, Chuck's Day Off is pretty great, and Chuck Reminds me of myself, so I can really connect.

#1 I would have to go with Restaurant Impossible. I used to enjoy Chef Robert Irvine's show Dinner impossible which eventually morphed into this newer show. It would be nice to see food network do a year or two year follow up to see if these restaurants are able to sustain the changes implemented by Irvine's crew.
#2 Diners, Drive-In, and Dives. How many hamburgers and po' boys can Fieri ingest during one season?? This show always leaves me craving those tasty vittles only to be enjoyed at greasy stop along scenic route 66. Fieri does have one of the greatest jobs on earth!

I've gotta go with Diner, Drive Ins & Dives. Just really cool to take a look at the little out there still doing things the old fashioned way. No chains featured, just the locals making good food. I've gone to several places I have seen on DDD, one inparticular, The Shed, in Ocean Springs MS. I would have never got out of the car based solely on the apperance of the place. Great food. Had I not seen it on DDD, I would have turned around and left.
